Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:52 am, the temperature is 40.3 degrees.
We have a chance for rain and snow early this morning before becoming sunny later today with a high in the middle 40’s. It will be breezy today at times. Tonight will be cold, in the upper 20’s. There is a chance for snow tomorrow, a high temperature in the low 30’s and winds gusting to 20 miles per hour. Sunday will be mostly cloudy with a high in the low 40’s.
Little River is flowing at 218 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.01 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 288 cfs. The water temperature is 39.2 degrees and steady this morning.
Other streams in the Smokies are flowing at or below normal. Water temperatures are low, in the 30’s at most elevations. Fishing is slow. The water is very clear and cold. Weighted nymphs are probably your only hope today.
Lowland rivers are flowing lower than normal and cold. Fishing is slow.
There are breaks in the generation schedules at some dams including Norris, South Holston and Center Hill. TVA and the Corps will be generating all day at several other dams nearby. Check the TVA website from the links below to see what your options are. You will have more if you are boating.
Will, David and I are ordering and receiving materials and tools for the fly tying department. I will be receiving a large Wapsi order today, which will take all day. I will re-order from them again Sunday.
We were slow at the shop yesterday. We finished a remodeling project on the ground floor and did some re-arranging. Jack and I installed some new LED lighting on the stairway to the fly tying department.
A new computer will be fired up today in the new ordering/receiving area downstairs.
I noticed Spring shipments arrived and were being processed and displayed this week.
Basically, we are getting ready for Spring. The long term forecast suggests Spring fishing won’t happen in January. Temperatures will be at about normal during the days and warmer than normal most nights. The average temperatures in January are a high of 48 degrees and a low of 25.
It looks like rainfall will increase the second half of the month. It has been drier than normal so far in January.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
