Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:50 am, the temperature is 39.4 degrees.
It will be sunny today with a high in the low to middle 40’s, falling to the low 30’s tonight. Rain is likely tomorrow. Expect a high in the mid to upper 40’s dropping to the mid-30’s tomorrow night. Friday and Saturday will be partly to mostly sunny with a high in the upper 40’s.
Little River is flowing at 178 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.88 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 305 cfs. The water temperature is 41.0 degrees this morning.
Most if not all streams in the Smokies are flowing lower than normal. Water temperatures will be rising slightly over the next few days. Fishing may not be good this week, but your chances of catching trout will improve some. Weighted nymphs rigs are your best options.
Fishing for smallmouth bass is slow in the lowland rivers. As the water warms, fishing where trout are stocked will improve. Try nymphs or egg patterns. I don’t think fishing will be good but it will be better than it has been.
Tailwater fishing is a better option if you can find a good generation schedule. TVA and the Corps are planning to turn the turbines off at times at some dams today. Check the TVA website from the links below to see what is planned for your favorite tailwater.
The long term weather forecast is encouraging. Temperatures will be warmer than normal, especially at night through early February. These forecasts can change but what I am expecting is warmer than normal water temperatures in the free flowing streams. I hope this weather pattern continues.
Business is slow at the shop which is normal in January. So far, this year is looking better than last year.
The fly tying department is stocked better than I have seen in 26 years. Though some materials have been hard to get and slow to arrive, we have worked diligently to keep a good stock for you.
Will, David and I have received some very larger orders during the past few days, then we immediately ordered again. I think you will be impressed. I know you will. I hear customers daily, complimenting us on what we have done in the fly tying department.
A young man from Mississippi was in awe yesterday while shopping for fly tying materials. He told me he lives four hours away from a fly shop. I reminded him that “We are only a phone call away and we don’t charge for shipping”.
If you buy fly tying materials from our online store, you will see many items that have been out of stock, are now back in stock, including Firehole 516 hooks. The popular 516 jig hooks in sizes #14 and #16 have been unavailable for weeks. We’ve got them now and plenty of them.
The whole shop is stocked very well, it is very organized and clean. We are prepared for and anticipating a busy Spring.
I know you are anticipating a great fishing Spring and hopefully it will be soon.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
