Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:49 am, the temperature is 39.0 degrees.
It will be partly cloudy today with a high temperature in the upper 40’s, falling to the high 20’s tonight. Tomorrow will be sunny with a high in the upper 40’s again. Sunday will be warmer with a high in the low 50’s, falling to the low 40’s at night. Rain will move in by Monday morning, with a high in the low 60’s dropping to the low to mid 40’s at night.
Little River is flowing at 246 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.42 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 293 cfs. The water temperature is 41.4 degrees this morning.
Streams in the Smokies rose yesterday as a result of rainfall in the area. Rainfall amounted to .60 inches in Townsend yesterday. Most streams have receded to near normal. Little Pigeon River is flowing higher than normal at 625 cfs, compared to median flow of 505 cfs.
The streams warmed some through the day yesterday. Water temperatures will creep higher over the next few days.
Fishing is not good right now but we will likely see some improvement over the next few days as the water warms.
If you go today, weighted nymph rigs will probably work best.
Lowland river fishing is slow though you might catch stocked trout using nymphs or egg patterns. Fishing for stocked trout should improve in these streams that exit the mountains over the next few days.
There are breaks in the generation schedules at some dams today. You may be able to fish on a few of the tailwaters in middle and east Tennessee at times. You have more options if you are boating. Check the generation schedule on your favorite tailwater to see what is available for you today. You can use the TVA links below.
We are getting ready for Spring fishing at the shop. That will occur when the stream temperatures are sustained at near 50 degrees or warmer. Bugs will be hatching and trout will be feeding.
The long term weather forecast indicates much warmer than normal temperatures most days and especially at night through the first week in February. We can’t always count on long term forecasts to be accurate, but the trend is leaning toward warmer weather and possibly an early Spring.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
