Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:46 am, the temperature is 28.8 degrees.
Today will be sunny with a high temperature in the upper 40’s falling to about 30 degrees tonight. It will be mostly sunny Sunday with a high in the low 50’s. Rain and warmer air will move into the area Sunday night.
Expect highs near or exceeding 60 degrees Monday and Tuesday with lows at night in the 40’s. Rain will continue through Monday night. Tuesday will be sunny and warm with a high in the upper 50’s.
Little River is flowing at 212 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.99 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 296 cfs. The water temperature is 39.9 degrees.
Most streams in the Smoky Mountains are flowing below normal and cold this morning. Fishing will be slow. If you go, try weighted nymph rigs.
The weather pattern is going to change to warmer and wetter. Water temperatures in the free flowing streams will warm beginning Sunday and continue to warm through Wednesday. Fishing will improve.
Fishing will be slow in the lowland free flowing rivers until the water temperatures rise early next week. These river that exit the mountains are cold today.
There are planned breaks in the generation schedules at TVA and Corps of Engineers dams so check the predicted flows on your favorite tailwater. You may have some options, especially if you are boating.
Coyotes are mating in east Tennessee. We have heard howling at night, more often than usual. One crossed the road in front of me on the way to work about two weeks ago. It is dark when I drive to work, but my headlights clearly lit the animal. There is no doubt, it was a coyote.
We used to see and hear a lot more coyotes than we do now. I think that has something to do with a man who lives in our valley. I have heard he is an excellent coyote hunter.

The long term weather forecast still indicates warmer temperatures in our area through February 6th. There are a couple of daily exceptions, but for the most part, it will be warmer than normal. Maybe Fishing Spring will arrive early again this year unless weather patterns change. We all hope for that to happen.
It appears it will be wetter too. This has been a fairly dry January. Last year was the wettest in the Tennessee Valley since records have been kept. Last year broke the record last set in 2018. If we have normal rainfall this year, I am hoping anglers will be able to fish the tailwaters more often this Spring.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
