Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:45 am, the temperature is 33.3 degrees.
Today will be partly sunny with a high in the low 50’s falling to the low 40’s tonight. Showers will move in tonight and last through tomorrow night. Rain may be heavy at times. Tomorrow’s high temperature will be in the middle 60’s, dropping to the low 50’s tomorrow night. Tuesday will be very warm with a high in the mid to upper 60’s.
Little River is flowing at 202 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.96 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 333 cfs. The water temperature is 38.5 degrees this morning.
Most streams in the Smoky Mountains are flowing lower than normal and water temperatures are cold this morning.
Rain and unusually warm days and nights are going to raise the water temperatures over the next few days. It will be nice today. Fishing will begin to improve later today as the water warms and improve further Monday through Wednesday. We may see rising and stained water at times through Tuesday morning.
Weighted nymph rigs will probably work best over the next few days. Trout will become more active and fishing will improve.
Lowland river fishing will be slow today but again, as the water warms, fishing for stocked trout will improve. Nymphs and egg patterns will be good choices in the stocked sections of these rivers where they exit the mountains and meander through the valleys.
There are periods of “no generation” planned at some dams today, offering you possible tailwater trout fishing options. TVA states “Norris will likely run off schedule between 1/22-1/25 due to transmission work”. I’m not sure exactly what that means. If you have fished on the Clinch River during the past couple of days, you may know. View the TVA schedules from the list below to see what your tailwater fishing options are in east and middle Tennessee.
I am going to be off two consecutive days beginning tomorrow. I have not done that since early October last year. Daniel will be writing the fishing report tomorrow and Tuesday.
Will is working on a project to import some really interesting fly tying materials from Europe to sell in the shop. He set up everything, placed an order and it should ship this week. He will be talking to Brent, at our bank Tuesday, to arrange for wire transfers to pay the supplier. DHL will be handling the shipping and tariffs.
Will is a competition angler. I consider him an expert at tying and fishing euro type flies. Some of the materials he would like to sell in the shop are not available from distributors in the US. So, he will be importing them for us and ultimately you.
He will handle the photography in our studio and place these materials on our online store. I don’t know what he is planning next, but I do know you will be happy with the job he is doing, like I am.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
