Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:47 am, the temperature is 35.4 degrees.
We may see light snow this morning before clearing later. The high temperature today will be about what it is now. It will be clear tonight with a low around 20 degrees. Tomorrow will be sunny and warmer, with a high in the middle 40’s.
Most roads in the Park are open though Newfound Gap Road is closed due to snow and ice.
Little River is flowing at 833 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 3.13 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 304 cfs. The water temperature is 46.0 degrees this morning and falling.
Most if not all streams in the Smokies are flowing higher than normal and swift. Water temperatures are falling quickly in all streams. Fishing conditions are not good due to high water and falling water temperatures.
If you decide to go fishing, weighted nymph rigs are your best option. Be careful wading. You don’t want to fall in and get wet today. Stash a change of dry clothes in your vehicle in case you do. I would not stray too far from my truck.
Lowland rivers are flowing high. Wading will be limited. The water is cold. Fishing will be slow. There is a remote chance you may catch a stocked trout or two. Weighted nymph rigs will work best. Try egg patterns too.
TVA plans to generate all day at most dams in the region. I checked a few generation schedules and did not see any tailwater wade fishing opportunities. There may be breaks in the generation at some dams so check the TVA website from the links below to see if you have any options.
Basically, this is not a good fishing day in East Tennessee. The coming weekend looks a little better. It will be warmer but we may get some rain, especially on Sunday.
Will and I will be ordering fly tying materials today. We will also be photographing new materials and add them to our online store.
Daniel bought some lumber yesterday. He and Dave Anderson will be building a new fly display today. Our fly selection will be much larger this year. They made some changes in where we are buying flies. Many are now coming from Umpqua Feather Merchants.
We have done quite a bit of remodeling during the past few months. The shop is looking great.
Getting ready for Spring is on our agenda, which may not be that far off. January is always our slowest month of the year. Business is better this year than last so far in January. We hope that trend continues.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
