Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:47 am, the temperature is 23.0 degrees.
It will be sunny today with a high temperature in the low 40’s, falling to the middle 20’s tonight. Saturday will be sunny and warmer, climbing to about 50 degrees, then dropping to the middle 30’s at night. Rain will move into the area late Saturday before changing to show showers. Little or no snow accumulation is expected. Sunday will be mostly cloudy and warm with a high temperature in the middle 50’s.
Little River is flowing at 567 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.76 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 302 cfs. The water temperature is 40.3 degrees this morning and falling quickly.
Most if not all streams in the Smokies are flowing higher than normal. Many are fishable now. Water temperatures are plunging.
Your best option is “high sticking” weighted nymphs. This is a good time to be fishing European style with weighted rigs. I would leave off the strike indicators and let your nymphs drift with a tight leader in the depths. With water temperatures dipping into the 30’s, fishing will be slow.
Use the same tactics when fishing in the lowland rivers where trout are stocked.
TVA and the Corps will be generating at many dams all day. There are exceptions. Tailwater anglers may find some options today, especially if you are boating. Check the TVA website from the list below to see what is going on at your favorite tailwater.
We are all working diligently to prepare for Spring. Dave A and Dave C are building a new and very large fly display and it looks great. There are three Dave’s at the shop. Dave E was off yesterday.
Will and I are adding new fly tying products to the online store. He is off today but back tomorrow. We will continue the project then. Since we do our own photography, this is a very time consuming process.
I talked to Lily Renzetti for a while yesterday. She, her husband Andy and their staff manufacture Renzetti fly tying vises and tools in Titusville, Florida and they are slammed. Last year was our best Renzetti year ever, and I think it was their best too. While we were talking, I counted the number of Renzetti vises we stock because we were discussing inventory turns. There are ten vises in stock when we are at full inventory.
She and I have been friends since the middle 90’s. We talk or at least email almost weekly. We place orders with her company almost weekly and sometimes, more often than that.
They make great products. The Renzetti Traveler is touted as the most popular fly tying vise in the world.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
