Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 5:47 am, the temperature is 40.5 degrees.
It is warm this morning and it is going to be much warmer later today. The expected high temperature will be in the low 60’s. We have a chance for showers tonight, with a low in the low to middle 40’s. It will rain tomorrow. The high temperature will be in the low 50’s, falling to the upper 30’s as the rain continues overnight. We may get up to 1 inch in rain in this system through Thursday night.
Not far to the north, our neighbors in Kentucky and those in other states are under an “Ice Storm Warning”. Be careful up there.
Little River is flowing at 368 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.39 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 300 cfs. The water temperature is 44.1 degrees this morning.
Streams in the Smokies that have USGS gauge sites are flowing at about normal. Water temperatures are much warmer than they have been in a while.
The water warming trend will continue today. Fishing may not be what we would call good, but it will be improved. The closer the water temperatures get to 50 degrees, the better the fishing will be.
I would plan on using weighted nymph rigs and fish the lower elevations where the water is warmer.
Fishing in the lowland rivers will be slow except possibly where trout are stocked. Try nymphs, egg patterns or streamers in these rivers, when fishing for trout.
I checked several generation schedules at dams nearby and did not see angler friendly flows for wading in the tailwaters. I did not check every one so view the schedule for your favorite tailwater and you may find suitable flows.
Daniel sent out an e-mail to thousands of anglers yesterday, announcing the arrival of Syndicate’s new Reaver Euro Fly Rod. This rod has been under development for a long time. It is what I would call “An Upscale Euro Nymphing Rod”.
John, who works at the shop, is close friends with and fishes with the owner of Syndicate. He has been talking about the Reaver for a while. John fished with a prototype and raved about it to us. Syndicate is located in Knoxville. We have been selling their Pipeline Euro Rods for a few years.
The Syndicate Reaver is made using the finest materials and components. It is available in 10-foot 2 and 3 weight models. They sell for $774.99. You can read more about the Syndicate Reaver on our online store by CLICKING HERE. From there, you can also order one online from us with Free Ground Shipping. Or, call the shop at 865-448-9459 to discuss the options with us.
I have a Syndicate Pipeline 10’ 3-weight. It has enough “give” in the tip to help avoid breaking off, but has enough muscle in the butt to fight large trout.
European Nymphing has caught on. Basically it is what I always called “high sticking” or “short line nymphing”, where you fish with weighted nymph rigs with a tight line so you can feel even the slightest “tick”.
Competition anglers took this type of fly fishing to an elevated level. They learned to tie better nymphs. They learned to rig differently. They developed new techniques. And, they won competitions around the world because this type of fly fishing is extremely effective.
We have been bringing into our fly tying department, competition hooks, beads and materials to tie Euro Nymphing flies. Check the Firehole Hooks and Beads department on our online store by CLICKING HERE. That is just part of the story but it will give you an idea of the commitment we have made to European fly fishing and fly tying, for you.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
