Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 5:39 am, the temperature is 34.7 degrees.
It rained overnight and changed to snow in Townsend. We got almost an inch of rain. There is a light dusting of snow on the ground.
More rain is coming today. We could get up to half of an inch. The high temperature will be in the low 40’s. Light rain is predicted tonight, possibly mixing with snow by Friday morning. Tonight’s low will be in the upper 20’s. There is a chance for rain or snow Friday. It will be cold, with a high in the upper 30’s falling to the high teens Friday night. It should be sunny and warmer Saturday and Sunday.
Newfound Gap Road and Cherokee Orchard Road are closed due to the chance for freezing rain and snow. More roads could close this morning.
Little River is flowing at 833 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 3.12 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 353 cfs. The river is rising. The water temperature is 40.6 degrees this morning.
All streams in the Smokies are flowing higher than normal and they are rising. Water temperatures are cold and falling. This is probably not a good day to be fishing in the Smokies.
Lowland rivers are flowing higher than normal and cold. Wading will be limited and fishing will probably be slow.
I looked at several TVA generation schedules this morning. They will be generating at most dams. There are breaks in the schedules at Cherokee and Norris dams. Check the TVA website from the links below and you may find a fishable tailwater, especially if you are boating.
Paula and I returned yesterday from a 10-day Winter break in Hilton Head, South Carolina. We were hoping to ride our bicycles every day. We rode some but it was cold and wet several of the days we were there. I worked quite a bit and even wrote the fishing report from there. It is good to be home. I can’t wait to get back to the shop.
Day before yesterday, I wrote about a bear that had denned in the crawl space of a home in Sevier County. Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency (TWRA) became involved. The bear left her den, and three tiny cubs behind. The bear did not return so the cubs were turned over to Appalachian Bear Rescue (ABR) in Townsend to be raised and returned to the wild in a few months.
The story did not end there. The mother bear returned to her den under the home. The cubs were brought back from ABR and reunited with their mother. You can read the updated story and watch video on the WBIR website by CLICKING HERE.
I like that ending better than the first.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
