Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:44 am, the temperature is 28.2 degrees.
We will finally enjoy sunshine today and tomorrow with no rain predicted until tomorrow night. Temperatures will top out in the low to middle 40’s today, dropping into the 20’s tonight. It will be warmer tomorrow, in the middle 50’s, falling into the middle 30’s tomorrow night.
Little River is flowing at 1,000 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 5.91 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 355 cfs. The water temperature is 41.2 degrees this morning.
Little Pigeon River is flowing high at the Sevierville gauge. Flow is currently 2,260 cfs, 3.86 feet, which compares to median flow of 761 cfs for this date.
Oconaluftee River is flowing at 1,520 cfs, 3.08 feet, compared to median flow of 599 cfs.
Tellico River is flowing at 806 cfs, 2.75 feet, which compares to median flow of 380 cfs.
Cataloochee Creek is flowing at 429 cfs, 3.54 feet, compared to median flow of 139 cfs.
Most streams in the mountains are flowing high but they are receding. Water temperatures are low. If you go, be careful wading. Your best option is to stand in safe water using weighted nymph rigs and hope for the best.
Lowland river fishing is slow due to high and cold water. Safe wading is limited.
I clicked on several TVA generation schedules and did not find any that offered wade fishing tailwater anglers an opportunity today. You may find one. I did not view all dam schedules.
It is definitely going to be warmer as we move through the end of February and into early March. We expect that anyway. These long term weather forecasts tend to be incorrect, one way or the other. I can’t help but look at them every morning, hoping for the best. What we need is a rise in the water temperatures, just a few degrees, for fishing to improve.
With the sun shining all weekend, and warmer temperatures tomorrow, I expect to see more people getting out of the house and moving around. More people were in the shop yesterday than I’ve seen all week. I think we will be busy this weekend. Anglers are definitely getting ready for Spring.
We are ready for you.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
