Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:41 am, the temperature is 50.5 degrees.
Light rain fell most of the day yesterday, amounting to .92 inches in Townsend and .72 inches at the Knoxville Airport. It is breezy this morning.
It will be cloudy today with a low chance for showers late this afternoon and a high temperature in the upper 60’s to 70 degrees. Tonight’s low temperature will be in the middle 50’s. It will be windy Sunday, with a chance for showers and a high in the low 70’s. We have a 100% chance for heavy rain Sunday night with a low temperature in the low 50’s.
Little River is flowing at 722 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.98 feet on the gauge. The river has peaked and beginning to recede. The water temperature is 48.0 degrees.
Little Pigeon River just peaked and is receding at the Sevierville gauge. Flow is currently 1,710 cfs, 3.46 feet, compared to median flow of 673 cfs.
Oconaluftee River is flowing at 1,580 cfs, 3.14 feet, compared to median flow of 621 cfs. The water temperature is 47.1 degrees. The river has peaked and is receding.
Tellico River is flowing at 979 cfs, 3.13 feet, compared to median flow of 337 cfs. The river just now peaked and is beginning to recede.
Cataloochee Creek is flowing at 316 cfs, 3.28 feet, compared to median flow of 133 cfs.
Wherever you go in the Smokies, you are probably going to find higher than normal flows and in some cases, strong currents. Be careful wading. Water temperatures will be rising over the next two days. It will be warm, day and night through tomorrow night.
We do not have ideal fishing conditions in the freestone mountain streams. You could go, and you may find fishable water. Stand in safe water and use weighted nymph rigs. Trout will be active this weekend. If the rain holds off today and tomorrow, fishing conditions will improve.
Lowland rivers are flowing higher than normal. Some may still be stained. Wading will be limited. I would fish where trout are stocked, using weighted nymph rigs.
I see breaks in the generation schedules at several dams today, including Norris Dam. Refer to the TVA website from the links below to see what options are available for tailwater fishing today.
The long term weather forecast looks promising. I do not see freezing temperatures through March 13th. We should see highs in the upper 50’s and 60’s through the period. Winter-like weather may be over now. I hope so.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
