Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:45 am, the temperature is 47.8 degrees.
It will be mostly cloudy today with a high temperature in the low 70’s dropping to the low 50’s tonight. This week will be very warm, with highs in the low to middle 70’s each day and warm at night. Expect rain on Thursday with a lower chance Friday and Saturday.
Little River is flowing at 513 cubic feet per second (cs) or 2.66 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 384 cfs. The water temperature is 50.4 degrees this morning.
Streams in the Smokies have receded to slightly higher than normal. Water temperatures are fairly warm in the low elevations. We will see water temperatures rise every day this week. Fishing will improve every day.
Plan for anything. Trout will be taking nymphs and wet flies for sure. You may find top water feeding too, especially later this week. Fish the lower elevations today. Look for water temperatures in the 50’s. Aquatic insects are active.
Lowland rivers are flowing fairly high. Fishing for smallmouth bass will improve as the rivers warm. Fishing for trout where they are stocked is good and will improve. Nymphs, egg patterns and streamers will work for you.
Most dams in the area will be churning their turbines today. I noticed a generation schedule at South Holston Dam that looks interesting. There may be others. Refer to the TVA website from the list below to see what options you have to fish the tailwaters.
When the lakes warm, smallmouth bass will become more active and move into the shallows, preparing to spawn. I would not count on that yet but it is something to look forward to. My favorite early Spring fly is a large black Wooly Bugger. When the bronze back bass are in pre-spawn mode, that is about all I use.
White bass will spawn next month. They will migrate up the rivers from the lakes, giving fly anglers all the action one can enjoy for several days.
We have fly fishing for smallmouth bass in the tailwaters to look forward to.
This is Spring folks and I could not be more excited. East Tennessee and the Smoky Mountains is a wonderful place to be in the Spring.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
