Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:41 am, the temperature is 34.9 degrees.
It will be very warm today, with a high temperature in the middle 70’s falling only to the low 60’s tonight. Rain will move into the region tonight and continue through tomorrow. It will be cooler tomorrow and cold tomorrow night, falling to the low 30’s. Heavy rain is possible tomorrow and tomorrow night.
Little River is flowing at 1,170 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 3.54 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 372 cfs. The water temperature is 49.3 degrees this morning.
All streams in the Smokies are flowing much higher than normal and higher than most anglers prefer. Safe wading will be limited. You may find some streams that are fishable. Stand in safe water and use weighted nymph rigs.
Water temperatures are chilly. They will warm further today. And, the streams will recede very slowly.
These are not good fishing conditions and they may worsen tonight and tomorrow.
Lowland rivers flowing out of the mountains are flowing high. Some may still be stained further downstream where muddy tributaries enter the rivers. Most rivers will be very hard to wade and fish safely. Be careful. Trout might be caught where they are stocked using weighted nymph rigs while standing in safe water.
TVA and the Corps will be generating at most tributary dams today. Check the TVA website and you may find a fishable tailwater. Some of these rivers may still be stained in areas below where muddy streams enter.
The National Weather Service website is not responding correctly. That is unusual.
Flooding occurred in areas of East Tennessee this weekend, including Knoxville. Though we did get heavy rain in the Smokies, I do not think any of the rivers reached flood stage, though some were close.
Our neighbors in Middle Tennessee are recovering from a deadly and devastating flood caused by heavy rain this past weekend. Up to 9 inches fell in some areas there in two days. There may be more rain tonight and tomorrow. My heart goes out to the fine people in Nashville and surrounding areas. Nashville was my home town earlier in life. I have many friends in the area. We will never forget the flood in 2010.
The Cumberland River runs through the heart of Nashville. The river is currently flowing at 124,000 cfs or 40.37 feet. Flood stage is 40 feet. The river is not receding.
The Harpeth River at Kingston Springs is flowing at 20,000 cfs or 20.72 feet. Flood stage is 20 feet. The Harpeth reached 35 feet this weekend or about 60,000 cfs. The river is receding.
Flooding occurred to our north in Kentucky on the upper Cumberland River and other areas.
Neighbors to our south are recovering from the deadly tornados in Alabama and Georgia that swept through this weekend. Many of our customers and friends live in those states. I hope you all are OK.
We need a break.
Have a good day and thank you for being here with us.
