Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:41 am, the temperature is 30.4 degrees.
It will be sunny every day through the weekend. High temperatures will range from 50 today, 60 tomorrow and the upper 60’s Sunday. The low temperature tonight will be in the low to middle 20’s. Tomorrow night will be warmer but still cold, in the middle 30’s.
Little River is flowing at 1,150 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 3.50 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 357 cfs. The water temperature is 44.2 degrees this morning and falling.
All streams in the Smokies are still flowing high. They are slowly receding. Little River is flowing at about a foot above what we call “The high side of good”. The river receded about 6 inches during the past 24 hours.
Water temperatures are plunging. We’ll see the same thing tonight. Even in the low elevations, trout will not be active. The water is too cold. We will see some water temperature improvement beginning Sunday and continuing through next week. There is no rain in the forecast until at least next Wednesday night.
If you go fishing today, stand in safe water and cast weighted nymph rigs. Be careful, the streams are still swift.
Lowland rivers are flowing high and cold.
TVA and the Corps of Engineers will be generating around the clock at every dam I checked this morning. Additionally, they will be sluicing and even spilling at some dams. They are trying to lower the lakes quickly, to increase water storage capacity, without causing flooding downstream. I did not see any tailwater fly fishing opportunities on the TVA website today.
The high water will be back to normal soon. Water temperatures will rise. Fishing will be good again soon. You should be able to find streams in the Smokies that are fishable this weekend.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
