Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:42 am, the temperature is 26.4 degrees.
It will be sunny and warmer beginning today and lasting through the weekend. High temperatures will be in the low 60’s today, upper 60’s tomorrow and low 70’s Monday. Lows will be in the 30’s tonight and 40’s tomorrow night.
No rain is predicted through Wednesday.
Little River is flowing at 859 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 3.15 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 357 cfs. The water temperature is 43.5 degrees and falling.
Streams in the Smokies are flowing higher than normal and receding slowly. For instance, Little Pigeon River at the Sevierville gauge fell only 6 inches during the past 24 hours. You may find fishable water today in the Smokies but many streams are swift so be careful wading.
Water temperatures are low, and trout will not be very active today. The streams will begin to warm some this weekend, then warm much further as next week progresses. Streams will continue to recede slowly each day until at least Thursday.
This is going to be a nice weekend. You may want to fish in the mountains. I would stand in safe water and cast weighted nymph rigs. I would also fish the lower elevations where the water is warmer. Fishing will improve as the water warms and recedes.
Lowland rivers are flowing high and wading will be limited. Little River was flowing clear yesterday in Townsend. Fishing will improve over the next few days where trout are stocked.
This will not be a good day to fish on the tailwaters. TVA and the Corps of Engineers are generating around the clock at every dam I checked. Additionally, they are sluicing or spilling at several tributary dams. They are trying to lower the water levels in the impoundments to increase water storage capacity while not flooding the larger rivers downstream.
April is normally a fairly wet month, though May and June are normally wetter. It was last year, on April 13th, we had our first flood in a while. Little River reached 9.71 feet on the gauge. Flood stage is 7 feet at the gauge in Townsend. Water swept over the highway in town near the old Back Porch Restaurant.
The worst flood on record occurred in March 1994. The peak gauge height during that flood reached 15.75 feet.
The dams on the Tennessee River are generating and spilling huge amounts of water. For instance, Fort Loudoun Dam is discharging 55,000 cfs.
Townsend and probably most gateway towns are bustling with visitors. There are many locals enjoying the beautiful weather in the Smoky Mountains. We were busy at the shop yesterday.
By the way, we will be closed tomorrow, Easter Sunday. I will not be writing a fishing report. I may sleep in which would be unusual.
I hope you have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
