Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:43 am, the temperature is 54.3 degrees.
It will be cooler today with a high in the middle 60’s and no rain predicted. Tonight’s low will be in the upper 30’s. Tomorrow will be cool again but warmer at night. Showers are likely Saturday with a high around 60 degrees. Sunday will be partly sunny with a high in the middle 60’s.
Little River is flowing at 246 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.15 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 303 cfs. The water temperature is 56.5 degrees this morning.
Most streams in the Smokies are flowing near normal with some rising slowly and temporarily. Water temperatures are good in the lower elevations. We will see the streams cool somewhat due to the colder nights and days ahead.
Fishing is good. Nymphs, wet flies and dry flies will work for now. As the stream temperatures slowly fall over the next few days, nymphs may work best. Fish the low elevations where the water is warmer. The trout will be more active in the warmer water.
Lowland river fishing conditions are good. Fishing will be especially good where trout are stocked. Nymphs and streamers are your best fly choices.
Check the generation schedules at Norris and South Holston Dams. TVA has breaks in the schedules at those dams today. They will be generating around the clock at many other dams. Hopefully there will be more tailwater fishing opportunities this weekend.
Lake fishing will be best early today as it will be overcast for a while. It will be fairly breezy at times and sunny later. Cast to the rocky banks with streamers, especially large weighted Wooly Buggers if you are fishing for smallmouth bass. Let your fly drop further as the water gets deeper and retrieve slowly.
We have quite a few fly fishing options today, especially on the free flowing streams. We are busy at the shop.
I changed out the tail lights on our kayak trailer last night and upgraded to LED. Our older kayak trailer has served us well. I don’t know how many times it has been towed to the Gulf and back. We are on our second set of tires. Brian was asking me about kayak trailers earlier this week. Ours is a Malone.
Trailers are fantastic for fishing kayaks, that tend to be wide and heavy. With a trailer, you don’t have to lift the heavy boats over your head. Our kayaks weigh 87 pounds each. Loading and unloading is done at waist level. The trailers can be light. Fully loaded, ours weighs in under 500 pounds. You can tow that with about any vehicle. Check them out. A kayak trailer can change your life.
We have a trailer hitch setup that has two receivers, one on top of the other with a space in between. One is used to tow the trailer while the top one one holds our bicycle rack.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
