Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:45 am, the temperature is 45.1 degrees.
Today will be mostly sunny with a high temperature near 70 degrees, falling to the low 40’s tonight. Tomorrow will be almost identical.
Little River is flowing at 173 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.92 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 274 cfs. The water temperature is 52.7 degrees this morning.
Other streams in the mountains are flowing near or slightly below normal.
Water temperatures are falling this morning, but sunshine and a very warm day will reverse that soon. I would start today fishing in the lower elevations where the water is warmer. Nymphs will work for sure. Dry flies may produce later today. This is going to be a beautiful one. Get out there if you can.
Lowland river fishing is good where trout are stocked. Smallmouth bass fishing will improve later today as the water warms. Nymphs and streamers will work best.
TVA and the Corps of Engineers are cutting back the turbines at several dams today, including Cherokee, Norris and South Holston. Look at the Operating Guide on the Norris Dam page. You will see, they are allowing the lake level to rise to meet their desired level for this time of the year. There have been no recent heavy rain events and none are predicted in the near future. TVA will be raising the lakes to Summer pool for the recreational boating season soon.
Visit the TVA website to see what your tailwater fishing options are today. I think tailwater fishing is going to improve, at least for a while.
If you are planning to fish on a lake today, go early or late when the sun is off the water. The wind should be calm. Hit the rocky banks with streamers. As the sun rises or falls, find shaded banks to fish.
There are many fly fishing options today. A lot of people are enjoying this beautiful weather and the great outdoors. Traffic is fairly heavy in town. We are busy at the shop. I am going to spend the day receiving fly tying orders and placing more.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
