Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:45 am, the temperature is 25.9 degrees.
We had Redbud Winter, Dogwood Winter, and now they are calling this one Dogwood Winter 2.0. It is dark outside, so I don’t know, but the odds are, we have frost on just about everything.
It will be mostly sunny today and warmer with a high temperature in the middle 50’s, falling to the middle 30’s tonight. After what could be another frosty morning, Friday will be warmer with a high in the middle 60’s and a low in the middle 40’s.
Saturday will be warm with a 100% chance for rain. One weather website I view every morning is predicting up to three quarters of an inch of rain. Sunday will be partly sunny with a high in the middle 60’s.
Little River is flowing at 144 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.81 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 253 cfs. The water temperature is 46.6 degrees and falling like a rock.
All streams in the Smokies are flowing lower than normal. Water temperatures are cold at all elevations and falling.
Fishing will be slow this morning. It may be slow all day. For improvement, the temps will have to rise to over 50 degrees. I don’t think that will happen. I would definitely wait a while before going. Your best bet today will be fishing with nymphs.
Lowland river fishing will be slow for trout until the water warms. Fishing for smallmouth bass will be slow.
There are breaks in the generation schedules at a few dams. Check out Norris and South Holston dams. There may be more.
I don’t hold out much hope for shallow water fly fishing on the lakes today. I don’t know for sure mainly because I have never launched our boat on the lakes around here when it is this cold. I think smallmouth bass have moved into deeper water. There may be exceptions depending on where you intend to fish.
What we have today are less than ideal fishing conditions except maybe at a few tailwaters.
Temperatures will be normal again next week and fishing will improve in the freestone streams. The long term weather forecast indicates a greater chance for rain through May 6th.
There are many visitors to the Smokies. The Ford Bronco event brought in a lot of them to Townsend. Fly fishers are here from other areas. We are busy at the shop. Whatever rain we get this weekend will be a blessing.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
