Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:40 am, the temperature is 55.0 degrees.
It will be a beautiful day, with a high in the middle to upper 70’s with no chance for rain. Tonight will be cool, in the low to middle 50’s.
Little River is flowing at 299 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.29 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 214 cfs. The water temperature is 55.0 degrees this morning.
Most if not all streams in the Smokies are flowing slightly higher than normal. Water temperatures are good in the low to middle elevations.
Nymphs will work. I would start with them this morning. Try a Hare’s Ear, Pheasant Tail or Tellico Nymph. As water temperatures begin to warm, switch to dry flies or a dry and dropper rig. Good dry fly choices are Yellow Sally Stonefly imitations, Elk Hair Caddis, Parachute Adams and small Yellow Stimulators.
Fishing conditions are very good in the Smokies.
Lowland River fishing is good, especially where trout are stocked. Smallmouth bass will be active later today as the waters warm. Nymphs and streamers will work best.
There are breaks in the generation schedules at many dams today, offering wade and boating anglers many tailwater fishing options. Visit the TVA website from the links below to see what is available for you today.
Fly fishing anglers have many good fishing opportunities. May is an excellent fishing month, one of the best. June is also a very good fishing month.
Paula and I returned last night from a three week vacation in Florida. We rented our usual home on a bay, where we can easily kayak fish for speckled trout and redfish. Across the main road from the home is the Gulf of Mexico, so we spent time there surf fishing for pompano, whiting and many other species, including sharks.
It was windy the first week. Bay fishing from the kayaks was limited but very good when we could get out on the water. That improved the last two weeks. Surf fishing was very good each week.
Frank and Freida joined us for a few days. Jack and Donna came down later and stayed for a while. We had a great time. I think I fished every day except one during the entire vacation.
It is always good to be home. I’m looking forward to getting back to work today. The Smoky Mountains look beautiful. The mountains are green now, unlike when we left in April.
We worried about the gasoline shortage yesterday when driving home. We took a different route than we usually do, almost entirely through Alabama. Gas stations in Alabama had plenty of fuel. We expected that since I had been looking at the “GasBuddy” website before coming home. I had never visited the GasBuddy website until late in this vacation. It was very helpful.
We are busy at the shop. Townsend is busy with tourist and local resident activity. There are Jeeps everywhere. There must be some kind of Jeep rally or show going on.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
