Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:52 am, the temperature is 60.3 degrees.
This week is going to be mostly dry and warm, more like Summer. Today’s high temperature will be around 80 degrees, falling to the upper 50’s tonight. Each day will gradually become warmer, reaching the upper 80’s by this weekend during the day and falling to the 50’s at night. We have a 20% chance for rain today and the same Wednesday. That’s probably it for rain this week.
Little River is flowing at 246 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.15 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 212 cfs. The water temperature is 56.7 degrees this morning at the low elevation Townsend gauge.
Most streams in the Smokies are flowing at or slightly higher than normal. Water temperatures are good. Fishing is very good.
Nymphs and dry flies will work for you. A dry and nymph dropper rig is a good choice. Or, just fish dry flies. Yellow Sally Stonefly patterns are working very well. Additionally, try Light Cahill or Elk Hair Caddis patterns. A small Yellow Stimulator is a good searching pattern option. You might want to try a Green Weenie. Trout will be actively feeding and looking for food.
Lowland river fishing for trout and smallmouth bass will be good this week. Use nymphs or streamers for trout and the same for smallmouth bass. I would be tempted to try a foam floating fly or popper in the lower reaches for bass. I don’t know if that will work yet, but it may.
Search the TVA website from the links below and you will find several tailwater fishing opportunities today, whether you are wading or boating. The trout tailwaters are fishing well. Fishing the lower reaches of the tailwaters for smallmouth bass may be good too.
Shallow water fishing on the lakes is improving as the waters warm. I would start early with streamers. Mine would be a large black and weighted Wooly Bugger. It is possible that bass and panfish will take surface flies. It is time to start trying those on the lakes. Go early or late when the sun is off the water, unless you choose a cloudy day. I don’t see any cloudy days in the forecast this week.
You have many options this week. Fishing is very good in the Tennessee River Valley.
Have a good day and thank you for being here with us.
