Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:35 am, the temperature is 58.3 degrees.
It will be mostly cloudy today with a high temperature in the low 80’s, dropping to the upper 50’s tonight. Tomorrow will be cloudy with a chance for thunderstorms in the afternoon. The high temperature will be in the upper 70’s. Rain and thunderstorms will continue and increase in likelihood Wednesday night, Thursday and Friday.
Little River is flowing at 159 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.87 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 176 cfs. The water temperature is 59.4 degrees this morning.
Most streams in the Smokies are flowing at or slightly below normal today. Water temperatures at all elevations are excellent, well within the trout’s preferred range.
Trout are feeding actively, taking dry flies and nymphs. My choice would be a dry fly, something that mimics a Yellow Sally Stonefly. There are many to choose from. Mine would be a #16 Yellow Stimulator. Light Cahill, Elk Hair Caddis and Beetle patterns will work. I would certainly drop a Green Weenie off my dry fly.
We have really good fishing conditions and with the expected rainfall, we should move into June with good fishing in the mountains.
Lowland rivers are fishing very well, thanks to the warming water temperatures and normal stream flows. I would use poppers or foam floating flies for smallmouth bass. A Wooly Bugger or a pair of them are good choices too. It will be overcast at times which will benefit anglers today. We can expect cloud cover every day through Saturday. This should be an excellent fishing week on the larger free flowing rivers, unless we get heavy rain later this week and that is not in the near forecast at this time.
Generation schedules remain pretty much what we have seen for a while. Generation at many dams will be infrequent except for pulsing for an hour or so at different times throughout the day. I noticed the generation will increase later in the afternoon at two dams I checked this morning. There are boating and wade fishing tailwater options today so visit the TVA website to determine your plan of action.
Lake fishing using fly rods is very good. This was a crowded weekend on the lakes, which we expected. Cloud cover will be good through the end of the week, making for very good lake fishing days. We do have the chance for thunderstorms beginning tomorrow, so be aware of that.
Game fish are taking top water offerings, poppers and foam floating flies. Streamer fishing is another option. Hit the rocky banks for smallmouth bass and cast to wooded cover for largemouth bass. Panfish fishing is good. Bluegill and Shellcrackers can be caught on poppers, foam floating flies or swimming nymphs. Carp are active.
There are areas where the Brood X Cicadas are on the water. If you are lucky enough to be at the right spot and right time, you will be rewarded with exception fishing on the lakes.
It is hard to say how much recreation boat traffic you will encounter. Cloudy skies and the chance for rain may reduce the number of boaters on the lakes this week.
June is usually one of the best fishing months in our area and this one is starting out very well.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
