Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:44 am, the temperature is 63.0 degrees.
It will be warm and muggy today with a high temperature in the low 80’s, falling to about 60 degrees tonight. We’ll get some rain this morning, with thunderstorms this afternoon and tonight. Strong wind is possible in some storms. We have a low chance for rain tomorrow before becoming sunny later with a high temperature in the low 80’s. The weekend will be mostly sunny and warm.
Little River is flowing at 149 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.80 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 163 cfs. The water temperature is 61.2 degrees this morning.
Most streams in the mountains are flowing at or slightly below normal this morning.
Fishing is good in the Smokies though I did hear one guide say fishing was unusually slow yesterday. Trout are taking dry flies and nymphs. Yellow Sally Stonefly, Elk Hair Caddis, and Light Cahill patterns are working best for your dry fly. Small bead head flies and Green Weenies are producing for your sub-surface imitations.
I am not hearing anything about active Brood X cicadas in the mountains. In fact, I have not seen one yet. I am hearing about swarms around lower Little River, the lakes and tailwaters. So, they are out there, probably appearing in the lower elevations for now.
Lowland river fishing is good. It will be overcast today which is an added benefit. Smallmouth bass are taking poppers and foam floating flies. Streamers will work too. Nymphs might work. Water levels are near normal.
Generation schedules at the local dams will offer varying tailwater fishing options today, whether you are wading or boating. Refer to the TVA website from the links below to plan your day.
Lake fishing is good. It will be overcast today, which is helpful. It will rain. You may have to deal with thunderstorms and possibly strong winds in those storms, so be aware of that. Winds will be out of the south at 5 to 10 miles per hour, according to the National Weather Service.
Otherwise, game fish are taking streamers, poppers and foam floating flies. Watch for swarms of cicadas and hopefully you can get into a feeding frenzy. Swimming dragonfly nymphs are a good choice, especially for larger bluegill, shellcrackers and other species.
We have been slow at the shop, which is normal following a holiday. I have been photographing fly tying materials and Will has been adding new tying tools and other items to our online store.
Yesterday, I switched the studio to photograph flies. Dave Anderson is adding new flies to our online store. Many of the new flies are designed to be used when Euro Nymphing. We have some fly tying orders arriving today. That will keep Will busy.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
