Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:41 am, the temperature is 68.7 degrees.
Rain fell in the Smokies yesterday and last evening. Rainfall near our home amounted to .82 inches.
Little River is flowing at 218 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.04 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 154 cfs. The water temperature is 65.3 degrees this morning.
Little Pigeon River is flowing at 625 cfs, 2.32 feet and rising. Median flow for this date is 271 cfs.
Oconaluftee River is flowing at 506 cfs, 1.86 feet, compared to median flow of 338 cfs. The river is rising.
Tellico River is flowing at 327 cfs, 1.68 feet, compared to median flow of 167 cfs. The river is receding.
Cataloochee Creek is flowing below normal.
Fishing may be good in the Smokies this week, depending on the water conditions where you intend to fish. These storms and showers are scattered, so some drainages could be affected adversely, while others may not. Watch for quickly rising water and exit the stream if you see that happening.
Nymphs and dry flies will work. We are recommending Yellow Sally Stonefly patterns for your dry fly. Nymph selections should include small bead head nymphs and Green Weenies.
Some lowland rivers are flowing fairly high right now and the water could become stained at times over the next three days. Otherwise, smallmouth bass and other species are taking poppers and foam floating flies.
Generation schedules below the dams vary greatly today. There are some wade and boating opportunities on the tailwaters. Check the TVA website from the links below to see what your options are.
Lake fishing is good. It may be a little breezy this afternoon. Of course there is the chance you may find yourself fishing in a thunderstorm every day this week. I would fish fairly close to the ramp in case you have to run for cover. Poppers, foam floating flies, streamers or swimming nymphs will work for bass and other species. You may encounter a swarm of cicadas. Hopefully you will. Be prepared with black foam floating flies. A lot of big carp have been caught lately on cicada patterns. Trout and bass are feeding on these big bugs too.
We met with Chris from Simms yesterday. He is a great guy with a lot of fishing knowledge. He spent 10 years as a professional bass tournament fisherman. He said that was the hardest work he has ever done. And, he traveled constantly. Chris lives in Middle Tennessee near Nashville. We will be placing orders from Simms to be delivered next Spring.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.

On October 21, 2020, many of us lost a very good friend. John Thurman of Norris, Tennessee passed away. John was one of the most helpful and truly kind people I have known. He worked tirelessly teaching fly anglers to tie flies, running the TU Trout Camp for children at the Tremont Institute, and sharing his skills and knowledge as a fly fisherman and entomologist with fellow anglers. John bird hunted and fished all over the United States. He was an avid sportsman, a good friend and family man.
A memorial service for John will be held on Sunday June 13th at 2:00 pm, at the Norris Religious Fellowship Church in Norris, Tennessee. The church is located at the corner of East Norris Road and Dogwood Road across from the Norris Middle School. Park in front or behind the Norris Middle School. Handicap parking is located behind the church.
