Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:38 am, the temperature is 65.8 degrees.
It will be mostly sunny today with a high temperature near 90 degrees and a slight chance for thunderstorms this afternoon. Tomorrow will be sunny and warm, and again near 90. Cooler air will move into the Smokies Tuesday through Thursday. It will be dry with highs in the low 80’s and lows in the 50’s.
Little River is flowing at 235 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.09 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 162 cfs. The water temperature is 65.1 degrees this morning.
Most streams in the Smokies are flowing above normal and at very good fishable levels. Trout will be taking dry flies and nymphs. Your dry fly selection should include Yellow Sally Stonefly, Yellow Stimulator, Elk Hair Caddis and Light Cahill patterns. Small bead head nymphs and Green Weenies are good sub-surface choices.
Fish the middle to higher elevations where the water is cooler today and tomorrow.
The lowland rivers are flowing well. Smallmouth bass and other species are actively feeding. Poppers and foam floating flies are good choices. Fish the shaded areas of these rivers or go early or late when the sun is off the water.
TVA and the Corps will be generating at many dams later today. The generation schedules are similar at all dams I checked this morning. You should find wade fishing opportunities on some tailwaters early. If you are boating, this afternoon may offer more. Visit the TVA website from the links below to see what your options are and plan accordingly.
I think the lakes will be crowded today with recreation boaters. Go early or late to avoid the crowds and to find shaded banks to fish. I would be launching our boat right now. It should not be windy at all today. Use poppers, foam floating flies, swimming nymphs or streamers.
A memorial service for our friend John Thurman will be held today at the Norris Religious Fellowship Church in Norris Tennessee. John passed away in October. This service will be well attended by family and many of us who John touched in our lives. I talked to one friend of ours this week who flew in from California for the service. The service will begin at 2:00 pm.
The church is located at the corner of East Norris Road and Dogwood Road, across from the Norris Middle School. Park in front or behind the school. Handicap parking is located behind the church.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
