Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:42 am, the temperature is 75.4 degrees.
This is the warmest morning so far this year. Humidity is high too, 86 percent.
It will be partly sunny early today with a high temperature in the upper 80’s. We have a chance for thunderstorms today. Thunderstorms are likely tonight and tomorrow. Tomorrows high temperature will be much cooler, in the middle 70’s. It is possible we could get up to 2 inches of rain tonight and tomorrow combined. We could use some rain.
Little River is flowing at 100 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.60 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 131 cfs. The water temperature is 68.5 degrees this morning and rose to over 71 degrees at the low elevation USGS gauge site near Townsend.
Most streams in the mountains are flowing below normal. Tellico River is an exception. Water temperatures are warm, so fish higher, in the middle to high elevations today where the water is cooler.
Dry flies and nymphs will work. A Yellow Sally Stonefly imitation with a Green Weenie dropper is a good fly combination to be using now. Fish the broken water where the trout are hiding in the riffles, deeper runs and plunge pools. Dress to blend with the forest. Don’t let the trout see you and you will catch more.
Most lowland rivers are flowing low. Go early this morning and fish the deeper pools and runs with poppers or foam floating flies.
There are several tailwater fishing opportunities today in the area, whether you are wading or boating. Check the TVA website from the links below to see what your options are.
This is probably not an ideal lake fishing day. It will be breezy. Thunderstorms are possible this afternoon with strong gusty winds and of course, lightning. Go early and be prepared to run for the ramp if you see a thunderhead approaching.
I have been saying all year, there have been almost no bears at our house. I have only seen two. Late yesterday Paula and I were sitting on the deck and a bear walked by on our driveway. Make that three bears this year. Last year was the “bear year” at our house.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
