Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:37 am, the temperature is 66.9 degrees.
Rainfall overnight amounted to 1.20 inches in Townsend.
Rain will continue to fall this morning and it may be heavy at times before ending around noon. The high temperature today will be in the middle to upper 70’s. The low temperature tonight will be in the upper 50’s. Tomorrow and Thursday will be sunny and warmer with highs in the 80’s falling to the upper 50’s and low 60’s at night.
Little River is flowing at 215 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.03 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 133 cfs. The river is rising quickly this morning. The water temperature is 68.9 degrees.
Many streams in the mountains are rising quickly, though that is not the case in the Little Pigeon watershed, or at least not yet. Oconaluftee River, Tellico River and Cataloochee Creek are rising fast. They may peak and recede soon. Or they could continue to rise and not be fishable today.
Some streams may be stained and I don’t know how much further they will rise. Other streams in different watersheds may be fine. If the Little Pigeon remains stable, fishing may be good in that stream and possibly others. It is very early so by the time you read this report, stream conditions may be different. But, more rain appears to be moving toward the mountains from the southwest.
Some lowland rivers are likely going to be flowing high and stained early today and those conditions could last for a while. Little Pigeon River and others may be an exception. Check the USGS stream flow gauges before going.
There are tailwater fishing opportunities for wade fishing this morning below some dams. There will be generation later at several, which may be fine for boat fishing. Check the TVA website to see the scheduled releases and plan your day. There is a possibility some tributaries entering the tailwaters are stained.
It is raining hard again here at our house. The weather radar indicates more possibly heavy rain is moving into the Smokies.
If you are planning to fish on one of the lakes, make that decision later. You may want to wait a while before going or sit at the ramp and wait. I’ve done that many times. What I see coming our way on the radar may be thunderstorms. Some creeks flowing into the lakes could be stained.
Fishing may be good today depending on where you go and what happens later this morning. Fishing may be slow, again, depending on where you go. Fishing will probably be best to our west and north. Two good friends of mine that I grew up with are floating on the Cumberland River in Kentucky below Wolf Creek Dam this morning. They are meeting their guide, Hagan Wonn shortly. They will have a very good fishing day. It will be cool and nice there.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
