Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:34 am, the temperature is 69.9 degrees.
Small and scattered thunderstorms blew through the Townsend area yesterday afternoon. One personal weather station near the shop reported .41 inches of rain while others in the area indicate slightly less.
The National Weather Service predicts a warm day today, with a low chance for thunderstorms this afternoon. They say the chance for rain increases significantly tomorrow and Friday. They are also predicting “Heavy Rain” Friday. Another weather website I refer to does not mention heavy rain on Friday.
It will be cooler by the weekend, with a high temperature Friday in the upper 70’s. Saturday will be sunny and fairly cool. Sunday will be sunny and a little warmer. This is going to be a nice 4th of July weekend according to what I am reading now.
Little River is flowing at 139 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.76 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 111 cfs. The water temperature is 67.1 degrees this morning.
Most streams in the Smokies are flowing at about normal today. Normal this time of the year is fairly low. Water temperatures are warm in the low elevations. Fish higher where the water is cooler.
Dry flies and nymphs are working. Terrestrial dry flies are a good choice. Try a beetle pattern and drop a small bead head nymph or a Green Weenie off the beetle. Other dry flies will produce too. A dry that mimics a Yellow Sally Stonefly is always a good choice during the Summer months.
Lowland rivers are flowing low, at least for now. But, they are flowing near normal. I would go early or late and cast poppers or foam floating flies in the deeper water. Smallmouth bass, rock bass and panfish are active.
There are many tailwater fishing opportunities today in the area. Most generation schedules I saw this morning indicate very little water released at the dams early, with increased and prolonged generation later today. Whether you are wade fishing or boating, you have many options today on our local tailwaters. Check the generation schedules before you go.
It may be a little breezy today on the lakes, especially if you get caught in a thunderstorm later. It will be mostly sunny so I would go early. Launch at daybreak and hit the banks with poppers or foam floating flies. After the sun gets higher in the sky, you may want to switch to streamers or swimming nymphs.
The lakes will be packed with boaters this weekend. Parking at the ramps will likely be limited. Go early, at daybreak, fish for a while, then go home.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
