Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:47 am, the temperature is 67.1 degrees.
It will be mostly sunny and hot today with a high temperature around 90 degrees and a chance for thunderstorm especially this afternoon. Tomorrow, Friday and Saturday will be more of the same, though the chance for showers and thunderstorms will be greater each day than it is today.
Little River is flowing at 112 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.65 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 125 cfs. The water temperature is 69.8 degrees this morning.
Most streams in the mountains are flowing right at normal. Tellico River is one exception as it is flowing quite a bit higher than normal. The river is receding. Water temperatures are very warm in the low elevations and that will continue over the next few days. Fish higher where the water is cooler. If the water temperatures exceed 65 degrees where you are fishing later today, move to a higher elevation where the water is cooler.
Dry flies and nymphs will work. Try a terrestrial or yellow dry fly with a small bead head nymph or Green Weenie as a dropper. Fish the broken water in riffles, plunge pools and deeper runs. Stay hidden from the trout and you will catch more.
Some lowland rivers flowing out of the mountains are at low levels, which is normal in August. Tellico River is one exception and there may be more. It will be sunny most of the day so fishing for smallmouth bass, rock bass and panfish will be best early or late unless the river you are fishing has plenty of tree canopy. Fish the shaded deeper water with poppers, foam floating flies, nymphs, streamers or crayfish patterns.
TVA and the Corps will be generating all day at Norris, Cherokee and Appalachia Dams. The turbines will be off or pulsing early at other dams, then generating later. If you are planning to wade fish on a tailwater, you have less options today. Check the TVA website to see what they are.
I would launch on a lake at daybreak, fly fish until the sun gets high and I can’t find shaded banks, then go home. It is going to be hot. I never do well using fly fishing gear when the sun is high. And, it is going to be hot and muggy. Drink plenty of water wherever you fish today.
According to the long term weather forecast, next week will be cooler, with a chance for showers and thunderstorms each day. The normal high temperatures during the last week of August is 84 degrees with a low of 60 degrees. September begins with a normal high of 83 degrees and a low of 59 degrees. The normal high temperature during the first week of October is 75 degrees with a low of 49 degrees. I know we are all looking forward to Fall and it is not far off.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
