Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:45 am, the temperature is 68.7 degrees.
Today will be hot again, with a high temperature in the upper 80’s. It will be partly cloudy with a chance for thunderstorms. Storms may contain strong gusty winds. New rainfall amounts between a quarter and half of an inch is possible in the mountains. It will be cooler tomorrow, with a high temperature in the middle 80’s. We have a good chance for rain and thunderstorms again tomorrow.
Tropical Storm Fred will make landfall in the Florida Keys this weekend and in the Panhandle by Monday morning. The storm is expected to move north through the southern states and reach our area by Wednesday morning. I read some predictions that indicate we may get between 1 to 3 inches of rain this week in Knoxville, with possibly more in the mountains.
The National Weather Service Hazardous Weather Outlook for Sunday through Friday reports, “Showers and thunderstorms are likely through Thursday. The main impact of these storms is expected to be heavy rainfall and the potential for flooding. Some storms may also produce strong wind gusts”.
Little River is flowing at 91.8 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.56 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 114 cfs. The water temperature is 71.4 degrees at the low elevation USGS stie near Townsend.
Most streams in the mountains are flowing at or below normal this morning. Water temperatures are warm in the low elevations. Fish higher where the water is cooler. Look for water temperatures in the middle 60’s or cooler. Dry flies and nymphs are working. A dry fly with a nymph dropper is working well for many anglers. Fish the broken water in riffles, deeper runs and plunge pools. Dress to blend with the forest. Don’t let the trout see you and you will catch more.
Lowland rivers flowing out of the mountains are at low levels this morning but that may change later today or over the next few days. Smallmouth bass, rock bass and panfish can be caught in the deeper pools. I would start with poppers or foam floating flies. If they are not producing, switch to streamers, nymphs or crayfish patterns.
There are some tailwater wade fishing options this morning. TVA and the Corps will be generating at most dams later today. Check the TVA website to see what your options are. It appears they will be sluicing 3,400 cfs at Cherokee Dam until further notice.
This may be a good lake fishing day but be aware of the possibility for strong thunderstorms. You will need to make that call. It will be partly cloudy which is beneficial for fly fishing lake anglers. I would launch at daybreak and fish the banks with poppers or foam floating flies and switch to streamers or swimming nymphs if needed. I always have one rod rigged for top water fishing and another rigged with sub surface flies.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
