Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:42 am, the temperature is 70.3 degrees.
Scattered thunderstorms moved through the area late yesterday and last night, though no heavy rainfall is reported so far that I can find. Rainfall amounted to .27 inches in Townsend, .08 inches at Cades Cove, none in Gatlinburg, .19 inches at the Knoxville Airport and .93 inches at Tellico Plains. It appeared on the radar, heavy rain fell to our west and north late yesterday.
Today will be partly sunny with a high temperature in the middle 80’s. Showers and thunderstorms are likely today. Tropical Storm Fred will bring heavy rain tomorrow and Wednesday. Two to three inches of rain is possible in the mountains with one to two inches in the foothills. Flooding is possible. Expect more rain Thursday through Saturday and possibly Sunday.
Little River is flowing at 91.8 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.56 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 138 cfs. The water temperature is 71.6 degrees this morning near Townsend.
Most streams in the mountains are flowing near normal. One exception is Tellico River, which is rising quickly. Water temperatures are very warm in the low elevations. Fish the higher elevation streams where the water is cooler. Dry flies and nymphs are working.
Many lowland rivers flowing out of the mountains are flowing near normal which is low, with some exceptions, Tellico River being one. Go early or late when the sun is off the water or fish shaded areas where there is tree canopy. Poppers, foam floating flies, streamers, nymphs and crayfish patterns should be in your fly box. Fishing will be best in the deeper pools and runs.
You have many tailwater fishing opportunities today, whether you are wading or boating. Generation will be light early, with the turbines running later today at some of the area dams I checked this morning. Visit the TVA website from the links below to plan your day of tailwater fishing.
Launch your boat or other watercraft early on the lakes and stay fairly close to the ramp. You may be chased off the lake by thunderstorms. Fish the banks with poppers, foam floating flies, streamers or swimming nymphs. This is not going to be a great lake fishing week. There is no way I would go tomorrow or Wednesday.
Well, we can use the rain. Unless Fred weakens, we should get plenty over the next few days.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
