Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:50 am, the temperature is 66.7 degrees.
Thunderstorms moved though the area early yesterday morning dropping heavy rain in some locations. The Knoxville Airport reported .71 inches. A personal weather station in Townsend indicated .77” fell there, with another station near our house reporting 1.26”. I was almost finished writing this report yesterday morning, I heard thunder, looked at the radar and saw the storms coming. That was a big surprise.
It will be mostly sunny today with a high temperature in the middle 80’s and a low chance for a shower or thunderstorm. Tomorrow will be warmer, in the upper 80’s with a low chance for thunderstorms. Monday will be hot, with a high temperature around 90 degrees.
Little River is flowing at 507 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.69 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 116 cfs. The water temperature is 64.9 degrees this morning.
Streams in the mountains are receding. All are flowing above normal, with some flowing fairly high. Be careful wading. You may find swift water in some areas. What we have now are flows that are more typical in the Spring.
Weighted nymph rigs are a good choice now, with dry flies working better as the waters recede.
Lowland rivers exiting the mountains are flowing higher than normal. Wading may be limited in some rivers today. Smallmouth bass, rock bass and panfish can be caught on poppers, foam floating flies, streamers or nymphs. Fish the shaded areas when the sun is high if they are available on the river you are fishing.
TVA and the Corps of Engineers will be generating all day at some tributary dams, with less generation early today at others. Choose a generation schedule you can work with to fish on the area tailwaters by visiting the TVA website from the links below.
If you plan to fish on a lake today, I would go early and launch at daybreak. Hit the banks with poppers, foam floating flies, streamers and swimming nymphs. Find shaded banks to fish as the sun rises. If it is overcast, all the better. You may find stained water on some impoundments that are usually stained after heavy rainfall, like we have had this week.
TVA will be generating and spilling at most dams on the Tennessee River. Lake levels are rising at some tributary lakes. Water is being held back to allow high water to move through the primary dams on the Tennessee River. We may see more generation at the tributary dams soon. Those impoundments will need to be lowered to provide storage capacity this Fall.
Rain that fell this week has been a blessing for anglers here. Rainfall numbers are much closer to normal now, than we have seen in a while. As a result, we should enjoy better Fall fishing when cooler temperatures arrive, which may be soon. We are about a week away from September. The average high temperature in September is 80 degrees with the average low being 55 degrees. Later in the month, those numbers are cooler, with highs in the 70’s and lows in the 50’s.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
