Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:49 am, the temperature is 70.2 degrees.
It will be partly sunny today with a high temperature in the middle 80’s. there is a chance for showers and thunderstorms. It will be sunny and very warm tomorrow with high temperatures reaching near 90 degrees. Tuesday will be hot, with a high in the low 90’s.
Little River is flowing at 463 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.61 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 116 cfs. The water temperature is 65.1 degrees this morning.
Little Pigeon River rose late yesterday and overnight but it is receding now. Flow is currently 1,390 cfs, 3.16 feet, compared to median flow of 229 cfs.
Rain affected Oconaluftee River overnight. The river is receding now. Flow is currently 944 cfs or 2.50 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 254 cfs.
Tellico River is flowing at 374 cfs, 1.85 feet, compared to median flow of 96 cfs.
Cataloochee Creek is flowing at 133 cfs, 2.73 feet, which compares to median flow of 51 cfs.
Streams in the mountains are still flowing higher than normal. Some are fishable but most larger rivers are swift so be careful wading. Weighted nymph rigs will work for you. Stand in safe water and “high stick” your nymphs. What we have are Spring-like water levels.
Many lowland rivers exiting the mountains are flowing higher than normal. Wading may be limited in many. Smallmouth bass, rock bass and panfish can be caught using poppers, foam floating flies, streamers, nymphs and crayfish patterns.
TVA and the Corps will be generating at most dams in the area this afternoon, with no or little releases early. There are exceptions, with Douglas Dam being one. They are generating there all day and night. Pay close attention to the flow schedules on the TVA website to see what tailwater options you have today.
Lake fishing with flies will be fair today. Launch early or late and cast to the shaded banks. I would have one fly rod rigged with top water poppers and foam floating flies. Another would be ready with streamers or swimming nymphs. Figure out what is working but don’t be hesitant about changing your strategy. It is possible that some lakes may be stained. Wind should not be an issue today. There is a chance for thunderstorms later so be on the lookout for those.
It is raining at our house again this morning. Where did that come from? A band of rain and thunderstorms are passing through our county and moving toward Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Rain is falling in western North Carolina too. These storms may affect water levels in the park this morning, again. Check the flow gauges before you go.
Extremely heavy rain fell in middle Tennessee yesterday. Seventeen inches of rainfall was recorded at one TVA gauge site. Ten to twelve inches were recorded at other stations. At least 10 people have died and many more are missing in and near Waverly, west of Nashville. You can read more about the deadly flash flooding by CLICKING HERE. This is a very sad story.
After writing the fishing report tomorrow, I will be off for a few days of fishing, finally. Daniel will be writing the fishing report.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
