Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:47 am, the temperature is 68.5 degrees.
It will be mostly sunny and hot today, with the high temperature reaching around 90 degrees. We have a slight chance for thunderstorms. The weekend will be sunny and hot, with highs in the low 90’s and a low chance for thunderstorms.
Little River is flowing at 295 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.25 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 104 cfs. The water temperature is 66.4 degrees this morning.
Most if not all streams in the mountains are flowing higher than normal. Water temperatures are warm in the lower elevations. Fish higher where the water is cooler. Dry flies and nymphs will work for you. Try a dry fly and dropper rig. Terrestrials are active. A buggy looking terrestrial dry fly is a good choice. Drop a small bead head nymph or Green Weenie off the dry.
Lowland rivers are flowing higher than normal. Fishing for smallmouth bass, rock bass and panfish should be fair to good. Go early or late when the sun is off the water or fish the shaded areas of the rivers where tree canopy is present. Poppers, foam floating flies, nymphs, streamers and crayfish patterns are all good choices.
There are some tailwater fishing options today. Power demand is high so the Corps and TVA will be generating, especially later in the day at many dams and all day at some. Visit the TVA website from the links below to pick a tailwater to fish today.
If you plan to fish on one of the lakes today, go early. Launch at daybreak and fish the banks with poppers, foam floating flies, streamers or swimming nymphs. I would fish the shaded banks until they are not available as the sun rises high. Then, I would pull the boat out and go home.
Heat indexes are going to be extremely high for a few days. Drink plenty of liquids to stay hydrated. Looking at the long term forecast, it appears this heat wave will end soon. We will enjoy cooler days and nights beginning Tuesday and lasting through September 10th. I am so looking forward to that.
Jack and I drove to Kentucky Monday and met five of our good friends for a well needed get-together and fishing trip. We rented a huge house perched on the Cumberland River, a few miles below Wolf Creek Dam and returned home yesterday. Four of us floated with guides down the river two days while the others fished on Hatchery Creek. We had a great time and fishing was good.
Frank and I floated with guide Hagan Wonn both days. Hagan is an old friend of ours who is an excellent guide. Guide Troy Humphrey drifted two different groups of two each day. He did a great job and is a very likeable guy. Fishing was good on the Cumberland River. We caught mostly rainbow trout with only a few small browns. Frank and I fished with dry and dropper rigs both days. He caught the largest trout of the trip in our boat, a rainbow that measured 20 ½”. My best trout measured 19 ½”.
Fishing on Hatchery Creek was good, and especially good the second day.
Most importantly to all of us, was spending time with good friends. We ate well, we laughed constantly, and it was hot!
It is always good to be home and I can’t wait to get back to work today.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
