Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:44 am, the temperature is 69.3 degrees.
Today, tomorrow and Monday are going to be hot days, with highs in the low 90’s and only a slight chance for thunderstorms. Cooler air and rain will move into the area Tuesday. Expect a high in the lower 80’s Tuesday and the upper 70’s Wednesday. The long term forecast indicate we will enjoy cooler temperatures through September 11th, day and night.
Little River is flowing at 212 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.02 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 102 cfs. The water temperature is 67.5 degrees this morning.
Stream flows in the mountains are excellent for the month of August, with most flowing quite a bit higher than normal. Water temperatures are warm in the low elevations and that will continue through at least Monday. Fish higher where the water is cooler.
Dry flies and nymphs are working well. I would use a terrestrial for my dry with a bead head nymph or a Green Weenie Dropper. Or, fish the buggy looking terrestrial dry fly alone. Hit the shaded areas and get a good drift. Going fishing early is a good idea, for your comfort, cooler water and better fishing.
Lowland rivers flowing out of the mountains are at good summer levels. Smallmouth bass, rock bass and panfish can be caught on poppers, foam floating flies, nymphs, streamers or crayfish patterns. I would go early or late. Or, fish the shaded pools and runs during the day.
You might try drifting through deep pools in a kayak or canoe, especially in the lower reaches of the rivers. If it gets hot, and it will, jump in the river to cool off.
If you check the TVA website, you may find suitable flows for tailwater fishing today, especially if you go early and plan well.
Launch your boat, kayak or canoe early in the lakes and plan on fishing until the sun is high and you can’t stand the heat anymore. Ease along the banks casting poppers, foam floating flies, streamers or swimming nymphs. As the sun rises, find shaded banks to fish.
We have been blessed with another fairly wet Summer. Rainfall at the Knoxville Airport, since June 1st has amounted to 12.05 inches. Normal is 12.74 inches. Last year, that number was 13.11 inches. Rain is likely Tuesday and Wednesday. There is no word yet on how much we will get.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
