Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:42 am, the temperature is 70.0 degrees.
The Flash Flood Watch has been lifted. Showers will continue today but heavy rain is not predicted. The high temperature today will be in the middle to upper 70’s with a low tonight around 60 degrees. It will be sunny tomorrow with a high near 80 degrees and a low in the middle to upper 50’s. Friday will be sunny and warmer.
Rainfall amounts varied in the area yesterday. We got 1.4” near our home in Dry Valley, .72 inches fell near the shop in town, Cades Cove reported 1.37 inches and Gatlinburg reports .76” fell yesterday.
Little River is flowing at 2,670 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 5.21 feet on the gauge, which is a record for this date. The river is currently receding. Median flow for this date is 93 cfs.
Little Pigeon River is flowing at 4,170 cfs, 5.16 feet, compared to median flow of 173 cfs. The river is rising.
Oconaluftee River is flowing at 3,030 cfs, ir 4.34 feet at the Birdtown gauge, a record for this date. Median flow is 222 cfs. The river is rising.
Tellico River is flowing very high at 4,970 cfs, 8.78 feet on the gauge, which is a record for this date. Median flow for this date is 90 cfs. The river peaked after midnight and is receding.
Cataloochee Creek is flowing at 251 cfs, 3.13 feet, compared to median flow of 46 cfs for this date. The creek is receding.
Most streams in the mountains are flowing higher than normal, and in most cases, too high to safely wade and fish. More rain is expected today. Fishing in the mountains is not recommended today.
Lowland rivers are flowing high, with some flowing very high, and most being too high to safely wade and fish.
There are wade and boat fishing options on some area tailwaters if you plan well. Visit the TVA website from the links below to see what your opportunities are today.
It will be overcast today, which is a good condition for lake fishing. It may be a little breezy at times and you will probably get wet. But, it will be cool. There is a chance you may find stained water in some areas. They are generating heavily at Fort Loudoun and Watts Bar dams but I saw no indication of spilling. I would probably fish on one of the smaller lakes above tributary dams or possibly Tellico Lake in the Little Tennessee River arm.
Fish the banks with poppers, foam floating flies, streamers or swimming nymphs.
The long term weather forecast tells me that Fall-like temperatures will prevail through the middle of September. We expect that and welcome the passing of this awful heat wave we have been dealing with lately.
The high water we have in the mountains will prove to be a blessing over the next couple of weeks. Good flows with cooler temperatures equate to good Fall fishing, even in the larger low elevation rivers.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
