Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:45 am, the temperature is 61.2 degrees.
Today will be mostly sunny with a high temperature in the low to middle 80’s. We have a good chance for showers and thunderstorms tonight. Labor Day will be cloudy early then clearing later with a high temperature around 80 degrees and a chance for rain early.
Little River is flowing at 406 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.50 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 92 cfs. The water temperature is 63.0 degrees this morning.
We consider 2.5 feet at the Townsend gauge to be on the high side of good. The water will be swift in spots but many anglers prefer flows like we have today in Little River. Others prefer lower water levels.
You will find many streams can be safely waded today. Other streams may have strong currents in areas, especially where the rivers are narrowed by rocky terrain. Tellico River is flowing fairly high this morning. Water temperatures are good, even in the low elevations. Trout will be actively feeding today.
Nymphs will work for sure. If you are into Euro Nymph Fishing, these conditions are ideal. Dry flies may work too. Try a dry fly with a nymph dropper. Terrestrial insects are very active so consider using a large buggy looking dry fly with a bead head nymph or Green Weenie dropper.
Lowland rivers are flowing higher than normal. Wading may be limited in some rivers or areas of rivers. Water temperatures are in the preferred range for smallmouth bass and other lowland river species. Try poppers, foam floating flies, nymphs, streamers or crayfish patterns.
Breaks in generation schedules at many dams will create good fishing conditions on some area tailwaters, especially earlier in the day. Check the TVA website from the links below to see what your options are.
This should be a good lake fishing day if you go early. It will be sunny so I would launch at daybreak and hit the dark banks with poppers, foam floating flies, streamers or swimming nymphs. As the sun rises higher, look for shaded banks to fish. It may be a little breezy at times today, with light winds expected to increase to about 10 miles per hour. I think the lakes will be crowded with recreation boaters so I would plan to go home later in the morning.
We have a lot of fly fishing choices today. This will be a good fishing day.
The long term weather forecast looks great, with Fall-like temperatures continuing through mid-September and beyond. The temperature outlook for September indicates the southeast will be normal. It should be cooler than normal to our north and warmer than normal in the west.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
