Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:40 am, the temperature is 64.9 degrees.
Daily temperatures will peak in the low to middle 80’s and fall to the low to middle 60’s through Saturday. It will be mostly cloudy today with a chance for showers and thunderstorms with the chance being greater this afternoon. The chance for showers and thunderstorms will continue each day through Saturday.
Little River is flowing at 132 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.73 feet at the Townsend gauge. Median flow for this date is 79 cfs. The water temperature is 65.3 degrees.
Streams in the Smokies remain at levels higher than median flow. Fly fishing for trout is good, especially for September. Water temperatures may be a little warm in the lowest elevations. Fish higher where the water is cooler. Dry flies and nymphs will work for you. Try terrestrial patterns.
Most lowland rivers flowing out of the mountains are still at levels higher than normal. Condition are fair to good for catching smallmouth bass, rock bass and panfish. Poppers, foam floating flies, nymphs, streamers or crayfish patterns should be in your fly boxes. It should be overcast today, which makes for a good day of fishing in these larger rivers and streams.
There are breaks in the generation schedules at some dams today and not so at others. If you plan to fish on a tailwater today, check the TVA website from the links below to see what your options are.
Due to the predicted cloudy skies today, fishing on the lakes will be much better. Winds are supposed to be light and variable. You may get wet! Hit the banks with poppers, foam floaters, streamers or swimming nymphs.
Watch for game fish breaking on schools of shad. Switch to a threadfin shad pattern and try to ease into the frenzy. Be very quiet and don’t stand to cast. You don’t want to be seen or heard. A small white Clouser Minnow might work. A Puglisi Threadfin Shad usually works for me.
Spearheaded by Anthony Hipps, the Southeastern Council of the Fly Fishing Federation is taking over Fly Tyers Weekend next year. Both floors of the conference center at Tremont Lodge in Townsend have been booked by Anthony for November 5th and 6th, 2022. I will keep you posted as more information becomes available. It will be great to see Fly Tyers Weekend return next year.
Our artist, Cindy Day will be updating the Fly Tyers Weekend logo so you will be seeing that soon.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
