Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:44 am, the temperature is 47.3 degrees.
It will be sunny and comfortable today and tomorrow, with high temperatures in the low to middle 70’s, falling to the low 50’s at night. There is no rain in the forecast through Thursday. Winds will be calm today and tomorrow.
This will be a beautiful weekend to be outside and go fishing.
Little River is flowing at 232 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.08 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 80 cfs. The water temperature is 59.0 degrees this morning.
Streams in the Smokies are flowing higher than normal but at good fishing levels, more like we see in the Spring. Water temperatures are excellent in the low to middle elevations. The highest elevation streams will be chilly this morning. Yesterday, the temperature at Cataloochee Creek dipped to near 50 degrees. Higher elevation streams were probably cooler than that. Those streams will warm later today.
Trout are actively feeding as the water temps are well within their preferred range. Dry flies and nymphs will work. You might want to try a terrestrial dry fly with a small bead head nymph or Green Weenie dropper.
Lowland rivers exiting the mountains and flowing through the valleys are at good fishing levels. Smallmouth bass, rock bass and panfish can be caught on poppers, foam floating flies, streamers, nymphs and crayfish patterns. I would go early or late when the sun is off the water for better fishing, or fish the shaded areas where tree canopy is present.
There are breaks in the generation at many dams in the area, especially during the morning hours. There are exceptions, with Center Hill Dam being one. They are generating around the clock there. But, you do have choices, if you are wading or boating. Check the TVA website to see what your tailwater fishing options are today.
Fishing will be best on the lakes for those of us using flies, early or late, when the sun is off the water. Hit the banks with poppers, foam floaters, streamers or swimming nymphs. Winds are supposed to be calm today and tomorrow. This will be a good lake fishing weekend.
The Townsend Fall Heritage Festival kicked off yesterday and will continue through today. Visit all the venues at the Townsend Visitors Center, the Great Smoky Mountains Heritage Center and the Little River Railroad & Lumber Company Museum. Plan on hearing lots of bluegrass bands, food vendors, and crafters. This is a large event so expect plenty of people too. You can read more by CLICKING HERE. Buses donated by the Great Smoky Mountains Heritage Center will run shuttles to and from the venues.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
