Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:44 am, the temperature is 63.4 degrees.
It will be cooler today, with a high temperature in the middle 70’s. Showers and thunderstorms are likely today, tonight and every day through Friday. Expect highs in the 70’s with lows in the 60’s through Friday. Heavy rain is possible through the period.
Little River is flowing at 112 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.65 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 75 cfs. The water temperature is 63.5 degrees this morning.
Streams in the mountains are flowing near normal. Normal in early October is low. With the threat of rain and possibly heavy rain, water levels will vary this week. Fishing conditions may be good in some drainages, while flows may be high in others. Nymphs will likely be your best fly choices but dry flies or streamers may work too.
Lowland rivers flowing out of the mountains and through the valleys look good right now. I drove to Maryville to get a flu shot yesterday and spotted Little River often, for several miles. The river looked good. Fishing conditions for smallmouth bass, rock bass and panfish are good, at least for now. Overcast skies make for even better conditions. Try poppers, foam floating flies, nymphs, streamers or crayfish patterns. These rivers may become stained and flowing high at times this week.
There are some tailwater fishing opportunities this morning and possibly early afternoon, depending on which river you intend to fish or where on the river you will be. The generators at dams will be churning later at most dams I checked. Visit the TVA website to see the schedules to plan your day.
Overcast conditions make for great lake fly fishing days and we will have many of those this week. Winds are expected to be fairly calm today but there is a chance for strong thunderstorms moving through the area. Out of caution, I would fish fairly close to the ramp, especially if you are fishing from a kayak or canoe. Hit the banks with poppers, foam floating flies, streamers or swimming nymphs.
This rain is coming at a good time. October can be a dry month. A good shot of water over the next few days will relieve us from the dry spell and improve fishing conditions, if we do not get too much.
Trees are turning the landscape into colorful displays as we move further into Fall. The days are short and getting shorter. When I drove to the shop yesterday morning, it was still dark. That is one thing I don’t like about Fall and Winter. I do enjoy the cooler temperatures.
We have the Fall spawn of brown and brook trout to look forward to. Nothing is quite as beautiful as a colorful spawning brook trout. Watching once secluded and hidden brown trout spawning out in the open is always a treat. I think it is good to just watch these fish while they are actually on the beds spawning. Then, we have to be careful not to step on their beds afterwards. Before they spawn and after it is over, to me, they are fair game.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
