Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:43 am, the temperature is 63.1 degrees.
Light rain has been falling every day for several days. The ground is saturated. A storm with heavy rain moved through the area early yesterday evening. Rainfall amounts varied around the area. The TVA rain gauge at Cades Cove reported .95 inches, a personal weather station in Townsend got 1.37 inches, 2.39 inches fell at the Knoxville Airport, and the TVA gauge in Gatlinburg is reporting .53 inches.
The rain is about over. We have a lower chance for rain today, with a high temperature in the middle 70’s, falling to the upper 50’s tonight. Saturday and Sunday will be clear, sunny and dry with highs in the upper 70’s and lows in the 50’s.
Little River is flowing at 555 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.77 feet at the USGS gauge. The river is rising quickly this morning. The current gauge reading is a record for this date. Median flow for this date is 86 cfs.
Little Pigeon River at the Sevierville gauge is flowing at 1,560 cfs, 3.31 feet, compared to median flow of 1,560 cfs. The river is rising and will set a record for this date. Median flow is 146 cfs.
Oconaluftee River is rising sharply, flowing at 1,650 cfs or 3.22 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 205 cfs. The river will soon set a record for the date.
Tellico River is flowing at 758 cfs, 2.68 feet and rising. Median flow for this date is 81 cfs. Another record flow for this date will be set soon at the Tellico Plains gauge.
Cataloochee Creek is flowing at 178 cfs, 2.90 feet and the creek has peaked and beginning to recede. Median flow is 45 cfs. Current flow is a record for this date.
West Prong of Little Pigeon River in Gatlinburg is flowing at 704 cfs, or 5.18 feet on the gauge. The river peaked and is receding.
Most if not all streams in the Smokies are too high to safely wade right now. Most are still rising. Most are probably stained.
Lowland rivers exiting the mountains and flowing through the valleys are at very high levels and rising. They are likely stained and not safe to wade.
TVA and the Corps will be generating ambitiously at many dams today. You may find lower flows at some dams this morning so check the TVA website to see what your options are. Maybe you can find a generation schedule you can work with.
Lake fishing conditions may be fair to good today. Expect turbid water where creeks enter the impoundments. You may find stained water overall in some lakes. The wind should be calm today. It will be overcast. If conditions are good on your favorite lake, cast to the banks with top water flies and poppers, streamers or swimming nymphs. Watch for game fish feeding on shad on the surface.
This is not a very encouraging fishing report. It is too early this morning to know how high the streams and rivers will rise then peak. I think the streams in the mountains will recede slowly, because the ground is saturated. We will have to wait and see what tomorrow brings.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
