Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:42 am, the temperature is 60.8 degrees.
It will be sunny and warm today and tomorrow with high temperatures in the low 80’s. It will be much cooler Saturday, with a high in the middle 60’s dropping to the low 40’s at night. Showers are likely Saturday. Sunday will be sunny and cool. The high will be in the low 60’s with a low around 41 degrees.
Little River is flowing at 170 cusic feet per second (cfs) or 1.88 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 86 cfs. The water temperature is62.1 degrees this morning.
All streams in the Smokies that have USGS gauge sites are flowing higher than normal and a good fishing levels, especially for October. Water temperatures are good at most elevations.
Dry flies and nymphs will work for you. Trout will be actively feeding.
Lowland rivers are flowing higher than normal and at good fishing levels. The rivers will be warm through Friday, at temperatures favorable for smallmouth bass. You can try poppers or foam floating flies. If that is not working, switch to nymphs or foam floating flies.
There are breaks in the generation schedules you can work with at a couple of dams for tailwater fishing today, with Norris Dam being one. TVA and the Corps are generating at most of the others in the area. If you are boating you have more options. Check the TVA website before you go.
Lake fishing will be best early or late when the sun is low. Winds are predicted to be calm today and tomorrow. I would cast to the banks with poppers or foam floating flies first. If they not producing strikes, switch to streamers or swimming nymphs.
October will begin trending toward much cooler and normal temperatures beginning Saturday. The low temperature Saturday night is predicted to fall to the freezing mark at Mount LeConte. Expect a low of 36 degrees at Newfound Gap. Stream temperatures will be falling. Anglers will be fishing in the low elevations where the water is warmer and probably waiting in the mornings for the water to warm before going.
Leaves are turning and it looks like Fall. Now, it is going to feel like Fall. I am looking forward to the change and you probably are too.
Fly tying season is about to begin. Much larger fly tying shipments are arriving at the shop. We got an order of vises and tools from Renzetti yesterday. One vise in that order was a “Master”, that sells for over $700. Now, we have two of those in stock. We sold two Masters on the same day last week. I don’t think that has happened before. We have sold more Renzetti Master vises this year than we ever have in the past and the year is not over.
We stock four of the C2003-R Traveler Pedestal vise, which is the best seller in the lineup. Now, we are keeping two of some good selling models and only one of the others.
A big box of hooks from Umpqua is sitting on Will’s desk right now. A very large Firehole order should ship from Montana today or tomorrow. Our largest Whiting Farms order for the year will arrive tomorrow. I was not expecting that one until December. I think Wapsi will be shipping an order today.
We are stocking up and getting ready. Visit the fly tying department on our online store by CLICKING HERE. Ground shipping is FREE!
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
