Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:43 am, the temperature is 64.9 degrees.
We have one more sunny and warm day to enjoy and this is it. The high temperature today will be in the low 80’s. Colder air will move into the region tonight with lows in the middle 50’s and rain showers are likely in the valley. Tomorrow will be cool with a high in the middle 60’s with showers and thunderstorms very likely. The low temperature tomorrow night is predicted to be in the low 40’s. Sunday will be sunny and cool with a high in the low 60’s dropping to the low 40’s at night. This is what Fall is supposed to be like.
Little River is flowing at 156 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.83 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 89 cfs. The water temperature is 62.8 degrees this morning.
All streams in the mountains that have USGS gauge sites are flowing higher than normal and at good fishing levels. Water temperatures are good at most elevations. Trout are actively feeding. Dry flies and nymphs will work for you.
It will be interesting to see how cool the water will be after Saturday night. Near freezing temperatures are predicted in the highest elevations.
Lowland rivers are flowing higher than normal. Water temperatures are still within the smallmouth bass preferred range. Try poppers or foam floating flies. If that is not working, switch to streamers or nymphs.
TVA and the Corps will be generating all day at most dams in the area. One exception is South Holston Dam. There may be others. Visit the TVA website to see what is going on today at your favorite tailwater.
This should be a fair lake fishing day. Winds are predicted to be out of the west at 5 mph this afternoon. Go early or late when the sun is low and the banks are dimly lit. Try poppers and foam floating flies or sub-surface streamers or swimming nymphs.
Deb and Joe Mathis, owners of Firehole Outdoors will begin packing their warehouse and processing facility next week. They and their family are moving from Bozeman, Montana, to the Kalispell, Montana area. They built a new 12,000 square foot facility in the more remote and less populated northwest corner in their state.
They will be loading the business in two tractor trailers, and unloading it in their new facility three days later. They plan to re-open the first week in November.
Glacier National Park and Flathead Lake are within the view from Kalispell. Flathead Lake was formed by a huge glacier and is the largest natural freshwater lake in the western US. It is approximately 30 miles long and 16 miles wide. The maximum depth is 370 feet with an average depth of 164 feet.
The population of Kelispell was 23,938 in 2018, compared to the current population of 53,923 of Bozeman. Bozeman is growing quickly. Joe said they needed more elbow room.
Firehole shipped a large order to us yesterday, the last shipment going out to us until the first week in November. We prepared for their move by ordering more than usual the day before the cutoff, which was October 10th. The Mathis family is going to be busy over the next two weeks. I am really excited for them.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
