Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:46 am, the temperature is 41.9 degrees.
It will be mostly cloudy today with a fair chance for showers and a high temperature in the low 60’s. It will be breezy today. We have a high wind warning in the higher elevations. Tomorrow and Saturday bring us a higher chance for rain with highs in the middle to upper 50’s falling to the 40’s at night. Sunday will be mostly sunny with a high in the low 60’s.
Little River is flowing at 87.7 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.57 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 93 cfs. The water temperature is 51.8 degrees this morning.
Most streams in the Smokies that have USGS gauge sites are flowing at or near normal. Normal is low. It will be overcast today, which is beneficial. Water temperatures are within the trout’s preferred range in the low to middle elevations.
Nymphs will probably work best but dry flies may produce too. Fish the broken water in riffles, plunge pools and runs.
Lowland rivers are flowing low. Smallmouth bass fishing will likely be fair to slow due to the cooler water temperatures. Trout, where they are stocked in these rivers will be active. Nymphs, streamers and egg patterns will produce for you.
Wade fishing options on the tailwaters are limited today as TVA and the Corps plan to generate at most dams in the area. You may have opportunities if you are boating. Check the TVA website from the links below to see what is happening on your favorite tailwater.
This is not an ideal lake fishing day. Winds are predicted to be blowing at 5 to 15 miles per hour early, and increase this afternoon with gusts up to 25 miles per hour. This will probably be a better boat cleaning and prepping day in anticipation of better lake fishing conditions. Sunday looks much better.
Chris Wood, CEO of Trout Unlimited sent a letter to a major truck and SUV manufacturer, complaining about their advertising. We see the ads often, where four wheel drive vehicles are driving through streams. It is not just one manufacturer, as others tout their vehicle’s ability to drive in shallow water streams. Chris offered a better advertising solution. Show ads with people using their off road vehicles doing stream restoration work. You can read the story on the Angling Trade website by CLICKING HERE.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
