Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:47 am, the temperature is 29.8 degrees.
Just like yesterday, it is colder than was predicted this morning. It will be foggy this morning with frost on the ground and rooftops. Otherwise, it will be sunny today with a high temperature in the upper 60’s falling to the low to middle 40’s tonight. Tomorrow will be sunny with a high in the low 70’s and a low in the middle 40’s. Wednesday will be almost identical to Tuesday.
Little River is flowing at 109 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.67 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 152 cfs. The water temperature is 46.4 degrees this morning and falling.
Some streams in the mountains are flowing at normal while other are at lower than normal levels. Water temperatures are colder than trout prefer and colder in the higher elevations.
Fishing for trout will be slow early today, but improve later as the streams warm. Fish in the lowest elevations where the water is warmer. Nymphs will work best. The streams are flowing fairly low and clear, so stealth is paramount to your success. Dress to blend with the forest. Fish the broken water where the trout are hiding.
Lowland river fishing for smallmouth bass will be slow. They become sluggish when the water is this cool. We may see some improvement over the next couple of days. Where trout are stocked in these rivers, fishing will be good, especially later today. Nymphs, streamers and egg patterns are good fly choices.
TVA and the Corps are generating for long periods at most dams today. I did notice afternoon breaks in the schedules at Center Hill and Watauga Dams. You may or may not be able to work with those schedules unless you are boating. Check the TVA website from the links below and you may find a suitable generation schedule to fish on a tailwater.
It will be sunny and warmer today. You could fly fish on a lake. Wind should not be an issue. Try heavily weighted streamers fished deep and slow. I don’t fish on lakes this time of the year so I don’t know what to expect. Anglers who target trout, musky and stripers on the lakes may have fair conditions but overcast skies would be best.
I noticed less traffic in Townsend yesterday. Leaf season is about over. Less people are fishing. Our business is slowing. Fly tyers will be active through the Winter months. We are ordering heavy for the fly tying department. We will be selling a lot of gift cards through the holidays. From our historical perspective, business is normal as we move closer to Winter.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
