Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:45 am, the temperature is 43.7 degrees.
It will be sunny and warm today with a high temperature in the low 70’s. The low tonight will be in the low 50’s. Tomorrow will be warm, wet and breezy. Expect a high in the upper 60’s with rain in the afternoon. Winds may gust as high as 20 miles per hour.
Little River is flowing at 96 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.61 feet on the gauge. Flow at the Townsend gauge has not changed in three days. Median flow for this date is 149 cfs. The water temperature is 47.5 degrees and steady.
Most if not all streams in the mountains are now flowing near and in most cases below normal. Water temperatures are cool but not falling much. Warm air and sunshine will raise the temperatures today, improving fishing. You will do best fishing in the lower elevations where the water is warmer. Nymphs will probably work best.
Lowland rivers are flowing near normal with Little River being one exception. Smallmouth bass fishing may improve somewhat today. Fishing for stocked trout in these rivers will be good. Nymphs, streamers, egg patterns and Squirmy Worms are good fly choices.
I order every week to replenish the fly tying department, and on each order from Wapsi are packages of the material used to tie Squirmy Worms. The most popular colors are pink and red.
TVA and the Corps are offering breaks in the generation schedules at some dams today. You might have a shot at tailwater wade fishing below some dams. If you are boating, you may be able to plan successful floats on some of the rivers. Visit the TVA website from the links below to see what is available for you today.
A fly tying video caught my eye and I will share it with you below. The fly is a chartreuse bead head caddis, tied on a jig hook using a slotted bead. Not only is this a great looking caddis larvae nymph, the video demonstrates how easy fly tying can be even for beginners. Tied on a jig hook with a slotted bead, allows the fly to drift with the hook up, helping to avoid snagging the bottom of the stream. A jig hook with a heavy tungsten bead also works well for the anchor fly on your Euro or tight line nymphing rig.
This may be one of the best fishing days we have had in a while. Get out and go if you can.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
