Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:38 am, the temperature is 40.3 degrees.
Unfortunately, what we have now is the high temperature today. It will get colder as the day progresses. It is going to feel like Winter. It will be cold tonight, with a low in the middle 20’s. Tomorrow and Sunday will be sunny and warmer.
It will likely snow this morning in the mountains with accumulations up to one inch. We may see flurries in the valley. The high temperature at Mount LeConte is predicted to be in the upper 20’s today.
Little River is flowing at 127 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.74 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 184 cfs. The water temperature is 44.1 degrees this morning.
Other streams in the Smokies are flowing at normal or below normal.
Water temperatures are chilly, though they have been rising overnight. They will become colder today. Cataloochee Creek’s water temperature just now peaked and is falling.
Fishing will be slow today. Trout are or will become inactive as the temperatures fall. Your best bet is to fish in a low elevation stream where the water is warmer. The water temperature Wednesday morning started out at 40.8 degrees in the low elevations. I talked to several customer who caught nothing and some appeared to be good anglers.
Fish weighted nymphs and you might catch trout.
Lowland rivers are chilly. Smallmouth bass fishing will be slow. You may catch stocked trout on nymphs, egg patterns or Squirmy Worms.
I added Squirmy Worms to this list over a week ago. We have an order arriving from Wapsi today or one day this weekend. In that order are 12 packs of Squirmy Worm material. That is what we sold in one week. We order from them weekly. Normally, we only have four or five packs in the order. The most popular colors are pink and red or different shades of both.
Squirmy Worms catch trout well, anywhere. They are lively and look like food. They are also very inexpensive to tie.
There are breaks in the generation schedules at several dams today, especially this afternoon. You can plan a float for trout at some tailwaters in middle and east Tennessee and that may be a good idea. If you are fishing with a guide, they know how to deal with these flows. Fishing has been good in some of the tailwaters recently. Check the TVA website from the links below to see what your options are.
LeConte Lodge in the Great Smoky Mountains officially closed for the Winter yesterday. They will re-open in March. A caretaker spends the Winter at the lodge, and even writes a daily blog called “High on LeConte”. WBIR has a great story on their website about the Lodge and the caretaker. It was great sleeping in yesterday morning. The shop was closed and I didn’t write a fishing report. Instead of rising at 4:30 am, I slept until 5:30 am. I felt like a different person.
Have a great Black Friday and thank you for being here with us.
