Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:41 am, the temperature is 23.7 degrees.
Today will be sunny with a high temperature in the middle 50’s, falling to the middle 30’s tonight. Tomorrow will be sunny again with a high in the low 50’s and a low in the upper 20’s.
Little River is flowing at 121 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.72 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 192 cfs. The water temperature is 41.4 degrees this morning.
Some streams in the Smokies are flowing at or higher than normal. Others are flowing below normal. Water temperatures are chilly. One example is Cataloochee Creek. The water temperature there is at about 37 degrees and falling.
Fishing today will be slow to maybe fair. Fish in the low elevation streams where the water is warmer. Weighted nymph rigs will work best. Brown trout may be active despite the cold water temperatures.
Fishing for smallmouth bass will be slow in the lowland rivers. Fishing for stocked trout may be fair. Try nymphs, egg patterns or Squirmy Worms.
There will be periods of “no generation” at some dams this afternoon. Tailwater wade fishermen may be able to work with some of the generation schedules today. If you are boating, there are more options. Check the TVA website to see what and where those options are. There are many rival college football games that will be played today so you may not see many other fishermen.
There is a lot of activity around Townsend this week. Visitors are here for the Thanksgiving holiday. We are busy at the shop too, though fishing conditions are less than ideal.
Will has been off for much of the month, fishing in the west US. He will be back to work today. I kept up with the ordering and receiving in the fly tying department while he was gone but I didn’t have time for much else. We may have one shipment arrive today but otherwise, we will be adding new fly tying items to the online store.
I photographed new Firehole beads yesterday. I have that pretty much figured out and it goes smoothly unless I drop beads on the floor. That happened twice yesterday. When it happens, it is usually several. I found each one, moving around the studio on my hands and knees.
One item I photographed and added yesterday will be of interest to many fly tyers, especially those who tie Euro nymphs. The tying material is a Whiting CDL “Euro” Tailing Pack in the color Dark Pardo. This is a saddle patch from a Coq de Leon rooster, and it contains a ton of tailing feathers for nymphs. It sells for $15. You can see it by CLICKING HERE. I ordered a bunch of them in October and they arrived last week. Evidently, this is a new product from Whiting Farms. This is not their usual $25 tailing pack. It is not shown on their website or on their price list.
Jake at Whiting suggested I try stocking them. I ordered four in September just to see what they look like and they sold in about a week. Our computer is set to stock fifteen. Hopefully, they will be available on a regular basis. If they are as popular as they appear to be, I will stock more.
Coq de Leon chickens were first raised in Spain. They are thought to be the first chicken feathers used to tie flies.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
