Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:53 am, the temperature is 59.2 degrees.
The temperature is not a typo. It is really that warm. It will be sunny today with a high in the middle to upper 60’s, falling to the middle 40’s tonight. Tomorrow will be sunny and warmer, with a high of 70 and a low in the middle 40’s. The weekend will be warm, with rain moving in Sunday night.
Little River is flowing at 100 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.63 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 208 cfs. The water temperature is 43.9 degrees and rising.
Streams in the mountains are flowing low but the good news is, they are warming. They will warm further as the week progresses. Fishing will improve. Go later when the water is warmer today. Trout will be spooky and hiding in the broken water. Dress to blend with the forest. Nymphs will probably work best today.
Lowland rivers are flowing low. Smallmouth bass fishing will probably be slow today. Trout fishing where they are stocked will be better. Nymphs, egg patterns and Squirmy Worms are good fly choices.
TVA is planning breaks in the generation at several dams this afternoon. Tailwater anglers may have a good day, whether you are wading or boating. It will take planning. Visit the TVA website from the links below to see what your tailwater trout fishing options are today.
A malfunction at Hebgen Dam in Montana, caused the flows in the Madison River to fall drastically, trapping trout and other fish species in side channels. Brown trout redds are exposed. Agency staff and volunteers captured fish in the side channels and moved them to the main channel. Divers worked yesterday to repair the dam. I don’t know how the situation stands today but we will find out soon. You can read a story on the Fly Fisherman Magazine website by CLICKING HERE.
We are meeting with Chris, our Simms sales representative this morning to see the Fall 2022 collection. We like Chris. We will be placing our Fall pre-season orders soon.
Customers are ordering gift cards for holiday gifts. It’s that time of the year.
We have a new Firehole hook in several sizes arriving. It is a short shank, wide gape jig hook and it is offered in several sizes. We are hoping they will arrive by Friday, and be out for you to see by the weekend. I will immediately take photos and put this new hook on our online store.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
