Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:43 am, the temperature is 39.4 degrees.
Today will be cloudy with a high temperature in the middle to upper 60’s, dropping to the middle 40’s tonight. Tomorrow will be partly sunny with a high in the middle 60’s and a low in the low 50’s. There is a low chance for rain tomorrow afternoon with showers likely tomorrow night and Monday. More rain is expected Tuesday and Wednesday and it will be cooler.
Little River is flowing at 93.8 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.60 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 223 cfs.
All streams in the Smokies are flowing low. The water is gradually warming. Fishing may not be good but it has improved. Nymphs will probably work best today. You might see blue wing olives or other aquatic insects on the water so be prepared if trout are feeding on them.
Lowland rivers are flowing low. Smallmouth bass may be somewhat active later today. Trout where they are stocked will be more active. Use nymphs, egg patterns or Squirmy Worms.
Generation schedules indicate there will be periods of low flows below some dams this afternoon. There are opportunities for tailwater anglers today. Check the TVA website from the links below to see what your options are.
According to the WBIR website, we could get between two to three inches of rain over the next few days. This is very good news. We need rain and it looks like we may get plenty. We can also expect mild temperatures through December 18th.
We have had no measurable snowfall in the valley this Fall and Winter. We did get a little snow in the mountains last month. I bought new snow tires for my truck a few weeks ago but that has not helped the situation so far.
Denver, Colorado has not had any snow since April 21st which is highly unusual. That is close to breaking an 87 year record of 235 consecutive days without snow.
Everyone in the west US is hoping for heavy snow in the Rockies this Winter to improve or end the persistent drought.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
