Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:41 am, the temperature is 28.0 degrees.
We got some much needed rain yesterday. Reported rainfall totals are, .45” Townsend, .73” Knoxville Airport, .21” Cades Cove and .21” in Gatlinburg.
It will be sunny early today, with increasing clouds later, and a high temperature in the upper 40’s. We have a chance for showers tonight and tomorrow morning. The low temperature tonight will be in the middle to upper 30’s. Tomorrow will be cool with a high in the low 50’s falling to the low 30’s tomorrow night. More rain is expected Thursday night through Saturday night.
Fishing this weekend may be good. It will be warm and wet Friday and Saturday. The high temperature Friday is predicted to be near 70 degrees with a low around 60. Saturday will be warm, near 70 again. The forecast calls for cold air to move in Saturday night. Sunday will be much cooler.
Little River is flowing at 139 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.79 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 222 cfs. The water temperature is 48.4 degrees and falling.
Most streams in the mountains are flowing higher than they have been in several days, but still lower than median flow. One exception is Tellico River, which is flowing at about median flow this morning. We have more rain coming over the next few days, which will hopefully raise water levels.
Water temperatures are fairly warm this morning but they are falling right now. Fish the lower elevations where the water is warmer and avoid being seen by the trout. Weighted nymph rigs will probably work best today.
Lowland rivers are flowing lower than normal. Fishing for trout, where they are stocked will be fair today. Nymphs, egg patterns and Squirmy Worms are good fly choices.
TVA is planning to shut down the generators at some dams this afternoon. You may have tailwater fishing options in the area later. If you are boating, you have more. Check the TVA website to see what your options are.
A very large Fishpond order arrived at the shop this weekend and everything is out and displayed for you. Fishpond gear is very popular for holiday gifts. Of course, gift cards are the hot item right now. The fly tying department has been very busy.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
